Netflix’s New Noir Series Just Dethroned ‘Outer Banks’ as Its #1 Show

Nordic noir has built a reputation over the years for delivering some of streaming’s most atmospheric crime dramas, favoring slow-burn tension and morally complicated detectives over flashy action. Netflix’s latest addition to that genre has managed to break through in a way few recent international releases have, quietly climbing to the very top of the platform’s global rankings.

That series is “Blood Sacrifice,” a five-episode Swedish crime thriller that dropped worldwide on August 20. Created by George Kay, best known for “Lupin” and “Hijack,” the show marks his first move into Swedish-language drama, and it’s already paying off in a major way.

According to Netflix’s own rankings, “Blood Sacrifice” has become the No. 1 show on the platform globally, officially unseating “Outer Banks” from the top spot. That’s a notable achievement for a foreign-language limited series going up against one of Netflix’s most established English-language franchises.

Set during Stockholm’s endless summer daylight, “Blood Sacrifice” follows homicide detective Thomas Berg, played by Jakob Oftebro, after two police officers responding to an emergency call turn up brutally murdered. Overwhelmed and ordered to keep his investigation quiet, Thomas reluctantly turns to the last person he wants involved: his estranged, disgraced former cop father, Alfred, played by Peter Andersson, forcing the two men to confront years of unresolved history while chasing a killer specifically targeting law enforcement.

Behind the camera, “Blood Sacrifice” is directed by Kristoffer Nyholm, who previously helmed the first season of “The Killing,” the Danish series widely credited with popularizing the moody, rain-soaked aesthetic that came to define Nordic noir as a genre. Notably, Nyholm takes a different visual approach this time around, setting the story against Stockholm’s perpetually bright summer light rather than the genre’s traditional gray, gloomy backdrop.

As the investigation deepens, Thomas and his partner Natalie, played by Electra Hallman, connect the murders to an earlier case, revealing that someone is systematically hunting police officers across the city. That realization forces the investigation into increasingly complicated territory, as Thomas, Alfred, Natalie and fellow detective Max Abrahamsson, played by Henrik Norlén, find themselves running an investigation within the investigation, since exposing the full truth risks jeopardizing the department itself.

The show’s supporting cast includes Alexander Abdallah as officer John-Jo Persson, one of the few openly gay members of the detective squad, whose fear intensifies once he suspects the killings may be motivated by hate given that one of the earliest victims was also queer. Anders Mossling rounds out the cast as Police Chief Lucas Lind, the department head pressuring Thomas for answers as public panic mounts.

Reviews for “Blood Sacrifice” have generally praised the series for successfully blending classic Nordic noir conventions with serial-killer thriller mechanics, while distinguishing itself through its central father-son dynamic. Critics have specifically highlighted how the fractured relationship between Thomas and Alfred adds genuine emotional weight to what could have otherwise played as a fairly standard procedural.

Not every reaction has been entirely glowing, with some reviewers noting that certain subplots, including tension involving the police union representative, occasionally slow the show’s overall pacing. Still, the series’ compact five-episode length has been widely cited as one of its biggest strengths, making it an easily digestible binge for viewers drawn to the genre’s methodical, atmosphere-driven storytelling.

With “Blood Sacrifice” now sitting atop Netflix’s global charts just days after its release, the series has quickly established itself as one of the platform’s standout international hits of the year. For a genre that’s historically found a devoted but relatively niche audience on streaming, unseating a major English-language franchise like “Outer Banks” marks a genuinely significant crossover moment.
