Neve Campbell Just Dropped Her Biggest ‘Scream 8’ Hint Yet
Few franchise stars have a relationship with their signature role as complicated as Neve Campbell’s with Sidney Prescott. Out of the seven ‘Scream’ movies, Campbell has appeared in six, and she passed on ‘Scream 6’ entirely over a pay dispute. Her absence was felt, and fans spent a long time wondering whether Woodsboro’s most famous survivor would ever come back.
She did, and it came at a price. Campbell reportedly secured a nearly $7 million deal for ‘Scream 7’, while Courteney Cox earned $2 million to reprise Gale Weathers. The bet paid off in a big way, with the film earning over $200 million globally, a new franchise record that surpassed the original 1996 film’s $173 million worldwide total.
That kind of success tends to speak for itself, and now Campbell has finally addressed what comes next. In a new interview, the actress confirmed she is officially returning for ‘Scream 8’, teasing that while she can’t tell anyone anything about the sequel, it is “in the pipeline.” Asked about her upcoming projects, she said she has two shows in development, one of which she has already sold, and that ‘Scream 8’ is in the works as well.
The most telling moment came when she was pressed for details. She laughed and said she can never tell anyone anything about the film, before adding, “I’ll be in it,” as she told the Associated Press. It is a short answer, but for a franchise that thrives on secrecy, it is about as definitive as a ‘Scream’ star is likely to get.
The confirmation fits with everything that has been bubbling up around the sequel. Deadline reported that Lilla and Nora Zuckerman, who most recently worked on the hit series ‘Poker Face’, have been onboarded to write the latest outing. That means the next chapter already has writers attached, and now it has its leading lady.
Campbell also appears to be shaping the story herself. Director Kevin Williamson said that during ‘Scream 7’, Campbell came up with a great idea for ‘Scream 8’, and that everyone seemed to run with it. Her creative input suggests she is far more than a returning name on the poster.
It also echoes what she said after ‘Scream 7’ arrived. Campbell told People she was hopeful about an eighth installment and said it would be great fun to make another one. At the time it sounded like cautious optimism, and now it reads like a setup for this week’s news.
What remains unclear is who else will be back with her. Which cast members return for a potential ‘Scream 8’ depends heavily on whether their characters survived ‘Scream 7’, though death doesn’t guarantee a character won’t return. ‘Scream 7’ also starred Courteney Cox, Isabel May, Anna Camp, Joel McHale and Matthew Lillard, so the list of possible returnees is a long one.
There is also the question of how much the franchise leans on its original star. One analyst put it bluntly, saying Campbell is to ‘Scream’ what Jamie Lee Curtis is to the ‘Halloween’ franchise. If that comparison holds, Campbell’s commitment may be the single most important piece of the sequel’s puzzle.
For now, Paramount has not shared a release date or plot details, and Campbell is clearly not about to spoil anything. But with the writers in place, the box office record set and Sidney Prescott officially back in the fold, Ghostface fans have every reason to keep their phones close. After all, the calls in this franchise rarely stay quiet for long.
