Few science fiction worlds are as instantly recognizable as the rain-soaked, neon-lit Los Angeles of ‘Blade Runner.’ Since Ridley Scott’s 1982 original, the franchise has asked what it means to be human, and each new chapter has taken that question somewhere darker. Prime Video is now preparing the next leap with a series set decades beyond the films.

The show is ‘Blade Runner 2099,’ an eight-episode limited series created by Silka Luisa, with Ridley Scott as an executive producer. It is set 50 years after ‘Blade Runner 2049’ and serves as a follow-up to both earlier films. After years of development, which began when Scott first teased a series in November 2021 and the title was revealed in February 2022, its release is finally close.

Now a new poster has arrived, and it puts the cast front and center. The artwork features Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer, and the series arrives in full on November 25.

The poster is built like a classic piece of cyberpunk art, with Yeoh at the top holding a pistol, Schafer in the center and a group of supporting characters below. Flying spinner vehicles and a glowing neon cityscape fill the background, and a Prime Video line at the bottom promises a new limited series on November 25. Yeoh and Schafer are the only names listed above the title.

The warm orange and cool blue palette is a clear nod to the franchise’s visual identity. It also signals that the show intends to lean into the atmosphere fans loved in the films.

The premise turns the original idea on its head. According to the official description, Los Angeles has been reborn, just not by humanity, and the story takes place after a replicant uprising in which the humans lost. Now the artificial beings are the ones in charge, and they are hunting down the humans who remain.

Within that world, Cora, a fugitive in a final bid to stop running, takes on one last identity: a Blade Runner. She is forced to partner with Olwen, a replicant Blade Runner who is in the final days of her life. Together they hunt a runaway hiding a truth that could collapse their fragile city.

Yeoh plays Olwen, and Schafer plays Cora. In the trailer, Olwen is assigned to hunt human insurgents but is also searching for a missing Blade Runner, while Cora forms an uneasy alliance with her to track down the runaway. According to the showrunner, the missing figure is a colleague of Olwen’s who was the first to disappear.

Cora has lived her entire life on the run, forced to adopt numerous identities. She takes on one final identity to secure a stable future for her brother. It’s a character built around disguise, which fits a franchise obsessed with the line between real and artificial.

Luisa, who previously ran ‘Shining Girls,’ serves as creator, showrunner and executive producer. Scott executive produces all 8 episodes but directs none of them. Jonathan van Tulleken, known for ‘Shōgun,’ directed the first two episodes, and Amazon MGM Studios and Alcon Television Group produce the series.

Filming took place in Prague and Belfast over about six months. The cast also includes Dimitri Abold and Lewis Gribben, along with Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim and Matthew Needham.

Prime Video showed a first-look teaser at San Diego Comic-Con in July, and then unveiled a full trailer and key art at New York Comic Con on October 10. Yeoh, Schafer and Luisa joined the panel, along with several cast members and executive producers. The poster is the latest step in a campaign that has built steadily toward the premiere.

All eight episodes will drop at once on Prime Video on November 25, in more than 240 countries and territories. That means there will be no weekly schedule, and viewers can watch the story in one sitting.

For a franchise that has spent more than four decades asking what makes someone human, flipping the power structure is a bold choice. If the series lives up to its poster, it could give fans the mood and ideas they expect while taking the story somewhere new. The long wait is almost over.
