New Look at Zendaya’s MJ and Spider-Man in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Teases Their Next Big Chapter
The next chapter of the Spider-Man story takes a very different turn for Peter Parker and MJ, played by Tom Holland and Zendaya.
The new film Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues directly after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where a major magic spell changed reality and erased Peter Parker from the memories of almost everyone in his life.
Because of that spell, no one in the world remembers Peter as a person, including his closest friends. That includes MJ, played by Zendaya, and Ned, played by Jacob Batalon. Even though they once shared a strong friendship and romantic bond, that entire history is gone from their minds. Peter is now completely alone in his personal life, while continuing his work as Spider-Man.
The end of No Way Home already showed Peter making the decision to live this isolated life. It was framed as a sacrifice tied to the idea of responsibility, with Peter choosing to protect others even if it meant losing the people he loved. Brand New Day now explores what that actually looks like in everyday life.
Zendaya spoke to Empire about how emotional this situation is for the characters, even from an outside perspective. She explained that even though MJ does not remember Peter, the situation still feels painful when you understand what they once meant to each other. She said, “As someone who cares about the characters and cares about these films, it’s like, ‘Oh my God, it’s so heartbreaking.’ You just feel so bad because you want them to be happy, and you know ultimately they would be happier together.”
In this new version of events, MJ is also shown moving forward with her life. She reportedly has a new romantic interest in the film, played by Eman Esfandi. This adds another layer of emotional distance between her and Peter, who can no longer approach her as someone from her past.
Even though MJ does not remember Peter Parker, she still knows Spider-Man exists. That means the two will still cross paths in some form during the film’s events, but their connection is now very different. It is no longer based on shared memories or personal history, but on Spider-Man’s role in the world.
Zendaya also explained how this change actually affects her performance. Without the need to act out a shared past, the character becomes simpler in one sense, but also colder in terms of emotional connection. She said, “It’s easy in a way, because I don’t have to play that I know this person. I don’t have to play all the history that they have together because seemingly, to her, they don’t.”
Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to explore the consequences of Peter Parker’s erased identity and what it means to lose personal relationships while still trying to be a hero. According to Empire, the film leans heavily into the emotional cost of that decision.
At its core, the story now focuses on a version of Peter who still remembers everything, while everyone else has moved on without him.
