New Reports Reveal Co-Lead for Upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Film
It looks like Thor might be getting more spotlight in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. According to industry insider Matt Belloni, Chris Hemsworth could be the second lead in the next Avengers movie.
On a recent episode of The Town podcast, Belloni talked to Wall Street Journal entertainment journalist Ben Fritz, and during their chat, the topic of the MCU came up.
Belloni said, “He’s got a major role.” He was referring to Hemsworth, suggesting the God of Thunder won’t just be part of the massive ensemble; he might be right up front with a leading role.
Marvel hasn’t officially confirmed this yet, but it doesn’t sound far off. Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, made some comments recently at the Fantastic Four: First Steps press event that might back it up.
When asked about the future of Marvel’s older heroes, Feige said, “Where we have great actors playing great characters, I think it would be fun to see them in multiple places.”
That kind of comment feels like a nod to someone like Hemsworth, who’s played Thor for over 15 years and still seems game to keep going. Feige also mentioned that while some heroes like Iron Man and Captain America may get new actors eventually, Hemsworth isn’t on that list just yet. “X-Men is where that will happen,” he said, referring to future recasts.
On top of all that, Hemsworth posted a message on social media that got fans talking. Along with a throwback video Marvel shared in 2022, he added, “Playing Thor has been one of the greatest honors of my life. For the last 15 years I’ve held Mjolnir and then Stormbreaker as the God of Thunder, but what made it truly special… was sharing it with all of you. Your passion, your cheers, and your love for this character have meant everything to me. Thank you for making my journey through the Marvel Cinematic Universe unforgettable… Next up, Doomsday!”
That last line, “Next up, Doomsday!”—had fans wondering if he’s teasing a huge role or maybe even his final one in the MCU. Is this the big finale for Thor? Or just a big new chapter?
Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be Marvel’s biggest crossover yet. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, the film brings together the Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, New Avengers, and the original X-Men to take on a new version of Doctor Doom, played by none other than Robert Downey Jr.
The cast is packed with stars from all corners of the Marvel universe, including Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Letitia Wright, Florence Pugh, Simu Liu, Tom Hiddleston, Pedro Pascal, and many more. Filming kicked off in April 2025 in England, and the movie is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026. A sequel, Secret Wars, is scheduled for the following year.
So far, Marvel hasn’t made anything official about Hemsworth’s role in Doomsday, but signs are pointing to something big. Between Belloni’s comments, Feige’s hints, and Hemsworth’s emotional post, it feels like Thor still has a major part to play in the future of the MCU.
And if this is the end for him? Well, he’s definitely going out with a bang.
