New Star Wars Book Uncovers ‘Andor’ K-2SO Horror Episode That Never Happened, With ‘Alien’ & ‘Predator’ Style Vibes
A scrapped ‘Star Wars’ horror-style episode of ‘Andor’ has surfaced in new behind-the-scenes details, revealing just how close the series came to taking a much darker turn with K-2SO at the center of it all.
According to Abrams Books’ The Art of Star Wars: Andor, described by Emmy-winning writer Dan Gilroy as a “definitive behind-the-scenes exploration” of the show’s production, the book dives deep into unused ideas, concept art, and early story plans that never made it to screen. Among the most striking reveals is an abandoned episode concept that would have pushed ‘Andor’ firmly into horror territory.
The idea was previously teased by series creator Tony Gilroy in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, where he explained that Season 2 once included a “horror movie” episode featuring K-2SO in a far more threatening role. The droid, normally known for his dry humor and loyalty in ‘Rogue One’, would instead have become the source of terror for a group of rebel characters.
The new book expands on that concept in more detail. Writer Dan Gilroy envisioned the episode as a self-contained story set on a Yavin-bound tanker ship. In this version, a KX-series unit becomes trapped aboard the vessel and begins hunting the rebels inside, turning the confined setting into a survival nightmare.

Production designer Luke Hull also described the tonal inspiration behind the idea, pointing directly to classic sci-fi horror influences. Speaking about the concept, he said, “We were going to have almost an Alien-esque/Predator combo in space on a ship, which would have been really cool, but it was a whole other, massive expense.” His comments underline just how visually intense and ambitious the episode would have been.
Budget constraints and narrative focus ultimately led to the episode being cut. Hull explained that the idea “always stood very large and looming outside the budget,” and also felt like a diversion from the main storyline. Instead of isolating the concept into a standalone detour, the creative team chose to weave key elements back into the broader arc of the season.
That decision helped keep ‘Andor’ aligned with its grounded political and character-driven storytelling style, even if it meant leaving behind one of its most genre-heavy experiments.
Still, the idea of a horror-inspired ‘Star Wars’ episode is not entirely far-fetched within the franchise. According to reporting from Abrams Books and past Lucasfilm publishing projects, ‘Star Wars’ has already explored darker tones in works like Dark Legends and the Vader’s Castle comics, along with novels such as Death Troopers, which reimagined stormtroopers in a zombie-like horror setting.
There have also been recent hints that Lucasfilm may still be interested in exploring horror within the galaxy far, far away. Tony Gilroy himself has suggested in past comments that a dedicated ‘Star Wars’ horror project could be in development, though no official details have been confirmed.
While the K-2SO horror episode of ‘Andor’ will remain an unrealized concept, its existence shows just how flexible the ‘Star Wars’ universe can be when it comes to tone and genre. It also raises questions about how far future projects might go in pushing those boundaries.
