Liverpool has spent much of 2026 quietly moonlighting as Gotham City, and this week the transformation hit a new level of icy detail. The Merseyside region has become the unofficial backlot for Matt Reeves’ next chapter in his Batman saga, with local landmarks standing in for the fictional metropolis just as they did during the original film’s production.

Fans tracking the shoot have grown used to sporadic sightings, from mocked-up police cruisers to yellow taxis parked outside historic buildings. Every new detail has been treated like a clue, feeding months of online speculation about what kind of story Reeves is building this time around.

Now a fresh batch of photos has given that speculation something concrete to chew on. The Batman Saga News shared new images showing multiple vehicles covered in snow parked near the Birkenhead Tunnel, credited to Rod Zamora on Facebook. The pictures show a cluster of cars buried under a thick layer of white, alongside a Gotham-branded truck and traffic signage rigged up for the shoot.

The wintry imagery lines up with everything that has leaked from the production so far. ‘The Batman: Part II’ is reportedly set during a harsh winter following a flood that reshapes Gotham City, and the crew has leaned into that atmosphere since cameras first rolled earlier this year. Reeves himself hinted at the tonal shift back in May, when he released camera test photos of the Batmobile navigating snowy conditions, drawing comparisons from entertainment outlets to the frostier mood of ‘Batman Returns’.

The Birkenhead Tunnel, part of the historic Queensway crossing connecting Liverpool to Birkenhead, has become one of the production’s most consistent filming spots. Crews were first spotted there in May alongside a damaged Gotham City Police Department vehicle and a stunt double standing in for Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne. That early activity was later described as a technical recce rather than a full shoot, but it set the stage for the returns that followed.

Filming officially resumed in the area this week, with news outlets confirming that official photography took place around the tunnel, and additional shooting expected to continue through the following days. Within the closed-off set, a white car bearing GPD markings, thought to represent the Gotham Police Department, was visible behind the fencing that had gone up around the old Rendel Street entrance earlier in the month.

According to a report from the Liverpool ECHO, official photography took place around the tunnel with additional shots being taken throughout the week, and the shoot is expected to move on to the Silver Jubilee Bridge in Runcorn once work at the tunnel wraps. The overnight filming has coincided with scheduled closures of the Queensway Tunnel, with Merseytravel listing nightly shutdowns for maintenance work running through the same period.

For longtime followers of the franchise, the sight of Merseyside doubling as Gotham is nothing new. St George’s Hall, the Walker Art Gallery, County Sessions House, Anfield Cemetery and the Royal Liver Building all played a part in building the original film’s atmosphere back in 2022, and several of those same locations have reappeared during this sequel’s early production phase.

What remains unclear is exactly what these snow-blanketed vehicles are being used for, though the timing suggests they are tied to major action sequences rather than smaller background shots. With ‘The Batman: Part II’ not expected in theaters until 2028, following a delay to allow more time in post-production, fans are likely to be piecing together set photos like these for a long while yet.

For now, the snow-covered cars near Birkenhead Tunnel offer one of the clearest visual hints yet at just how central winter is going to be to this next chapter of Gotham’s story.
