Nicolas Cage’s 85% Horror Hit Is Getting a Sequel—But There’s a Big Change Fans Need to Know
Big moves are happening in Hollywood again, especially when it comes to horror films. Studios are putting more focus on dark stories, strange characters, and eerie worlds that audiences can keep coming back to. When a movie connects in a big way, it often opens the door for more stories set in the same space.
Now it seems that one of the most critically acclaimed horror movies in the last few years is getting a sequel, but with some changes.
That is exactly what is happening now with Longlegs. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a new project connected to the film is officially in the works, but it is not a direct sequel.
Director Osgood Perkins is returning to write and direct the new movie. Nicolas Cage is also coming back, both as a star and a producer. This time, however, the project has moved to Paramount Pictures, which has taken over from the original distributor Neon.
The report explains that the new film is being described as something “set in the Longlegs universe” rather than a sequel. That means it will explore the same world, but with a different story and possibly new characters or angles.
The first movie came out in 2024 and quickly became a surprise hit. It followed an FBI agent, played by Maika Monroe, who investigates a strange case involving murder-suicides tied to a serial killer known as Longlegs. Cage played the killer in a performance that stood out for how unusual and intense it was.
The film did very well at the box office. It earned about $128 million worldwide on a budget of under $10 million. That made it the highest-grossing domestic release for Neon and one of the biggest independent film successes in recent years.
Sources say Neon is not involved in the new project because the scale and budget have grown beyond what the company usually handles. Paramount, on the other hand, has been building up its horror lineup. The studio has been working with different producers and filmmakers to expand its presence in the genre.
At the same time, Perkins has been staying busy. After the success of Longlegs, he went on to direct other horror projects and recently finished work on a new film called The Young People, which features Nicole Kidman among its cast.
Cage also has several projects coming up. He is set to appear in the series Spider-Noir on Amazon Prime Video, and later this year he will play football legend John Madden in a film directed by David O. Russell.
For now, details about the new Longlegs story are being kept quiet. But with the same director returning and a bigger studio backing it, the project is already drawing attention from fans of the original.
