‘Obsession’ Finally Gets a Streaming Release Date Fans Have Been Waiting For
Horror fans finally have a date to circle. ‘Obsession,’ written and directed by Curry Barker in his feature directorial debut, the film follows Bear, a shy music store employee, who wishes for his coworker and longtime crush Nikki to fall in love with him, only to discover that his wish comes at a dark and sinister price.
The cast is rounded out by Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter. Now Peacock has confirmed the movie’s official streaming date.
The breakout indie horror sensation of the year will begin streaming on Peacock this Friday, July 17, giving audiences another chance to catch what has become one of the most talked-about films of 2026.
The film marks a 63-day theatrical window to streaming, with Focus Features having acquired North American and select foreign rights out of the Toronto International Film Festival for more than 15 million dollars. ‘Obsession’ premiered at TIFF in September 2025 before opening in theaters this past May, and its digital release date was reportedly delayed specifically because of how well the film was performing in cinemas.
The numbers behind ‘Obsession’ are staggering for a film with such a modest budget. Made for roughly 750,000 dollars and financed originally by Capstone, the movie opened to 17.1 million dollars domestically in mid May and legged out to an unprecedented 14.6 times multiple, pushing its current domestic total to around 249.5 million dollars off a rare A minus CinemaScore for a horror film. Worldwide, the film has grossed approximately 370 million dollars, making it the highest grossing release in Focus Features history.
Critics have been just as enthusiastic as audiences. The film currently holds a Fresh score of 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes based on 292 reviews, and industry observers have compared its cultural impact to Jordan Peele’s ‘Get Out,’ with some suggesting it could become a genuine awards season contender.
Ahead of its Peacock debut, ‘Obsession’ already made its home entertainment debut on digital platforms on June 30, and it will also arrive on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on July 14 through Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. The film reportedly topped the Apple TV Store chart after its digital release, outperforming other major 2026 titles like ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ and ‘Michael.’

Barker’s career is only accelerating in the wake of the film’s success. He is now preparing his next feature, ‘Anything but Ghosts,’ starring Aaron Paul and Bryce Dallas Howard, and is also attached to direct A24’s upcoming reboot of ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.’ Barker has also hinted at ideas for an ‘Obsession’ sequel, though he has suggested it likely won’t come together for at least a couple of years.
Are you planning to watch ‘Obsession’ when it hits Peacock?
With its theatrical run still going strong and a streaming debut just days away, ‘Obsession’ looks poised to extend its reign as 2026’s defining horror breakout even further, giving Peacock subscribers a reason to clear their schedule this Friday night.
