Obsidian Entertainment could be returning to the Fallout universe, giving fans of the popular role-playing series a major reason to get excited. According to a report from Bloomberg, the Xbox-owned studio is shifting its plans as part of a larger company restructuring, with a new Fallout game now reportedly moving forward.

The project is expected to be led by Josh Sawyer, Obsidian’s design director who previously worked on Fallout: New Vegas. However, the plans are still early and could change before the game is officially announced.

The reported Fallout project comes as Microsoft and Xbox continue making major changes across their gaming division. Bloomberg reports that Obsidian has canceled several projects during the restructuring, including a planned sequel to Avowed, the studio’s 2025 fantasy role-playing game. The company has also reportedly reduced its workforce, with around a quarter of Obsidian employees affected by layoffs.

For Fallout fans, the possibility of Obsidian returning to the franchise is especially exciting because of the studio’s history with the series. Obsidian developed Fallout: New Vegas in 2010, which has since become one of the most beloved entries in the franchise. The game was directed by Sawyer and is often praised by fans for its writing, characters, and player choices.

The new project would reportedly be connected to the wider Fallout universe rather than being a separate game inspired by the series. Before this change, Sawyer had reportedly been working on a different role-playing game that shared some similarities with Fallout but was not officially part of the franchise.

The Fallout series has been without a major single-player release for years. The last mainline entry was Fallout 4 in 2015, while Fallout 76 launched in 2018 as an online multiplayer experience. Since then, Bethesda Game Studios has focused on other projects while continuing to support Fallout 76 with updates and new content.

The franchise has also received a major boost from the success of Amazon’s Fallout television series, which introduced the world to a much larger audience. The show’s popularity has increased interest in the games, and Microsoft is reportedly looking to invest more heavily in its biggest brands, including Fallout.

According to Bloomberg, Bethesda Game Studios will also be involved with the new Obsidian project. Bethesda has controlled the Fallout franchise since acquiring the rights years ago, but the collaboration could bring together two studios with strong connections to the series.

The changes at Obsidian come after a difficult period for the studio. While the company released multiple games recently, Bloomberg reports that some titles did not perform as well commercially as expected. The planned Avowed sequel was reportedly progressing well and could have been announced within the next year, but it was canceled as part of Xbox’s new strategy.

Despite the cancellations, Obsidian will continue supporting some of its existing projects. The studio is expected to keep working on downloadable content for The Outer Worlds 2 and continue development on Grounded 2, its multiplayer survival game.

While there is no release date or official announcement for Obsidian’s reported Fallout game yet, the return of the New Vegas team could be exactly what many fans have been hoping for. If the project moves forward, it could mark one of the biggest Fallout developments in years.
