That is exactly what is happening with a widely shared clip from Gosling’s appearance on Josh Horowitz’s ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, in which the actor can be seen deflecting questions about playing Ghost Rider with a perfectly straight face. The moment has taken on new life now that Marvel has confirmed Gosling really is stepping into the role, making his earlier evasiveness look like a masterclass in keeping a secret.

During that podcast appearance, Horowitz directly asked Gosling whether he had officially met with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige about the part. Gosling responded coyly, saying that some discussions had been had but that it remained a complicated situation, adding that he would keep hope alive rather than confirming anything more concrete.

The exchange did not stop there. When pressed on why he had been so vocal about wanting to play the character in the first place, a desire that traced back to comments he first made in 2022, Gosling simply shrugged it off as just a feeling, offering no further explanation for his fixation on the fiery antihero.

Gosling also could not resist a joke tied to his personal life during that same conversation, pointing out that his longtime partner Eva Mendes had already starred opposite Nicolas Cage in the original ‘Ghost Rider’ film. He quipped that he was just happy one of them finally got to do it, poking fun at how long he had been circling the role from the outside.

That teasing eventually paid off in dramatic fashion at San Diego Comic Con, where Marvel Studios officially confirmed Gosling as the new cinematic Ghost Rider during its Hall H panel. In a full circle moment, Horowitz himself took part in the reveal, calling out to Kevin Feige from the crowd to ask why Gosling still was not Ghost Rider, prompting Feige to bring Gosling out on stage in front of the audience.

Gosling addressed the crowd directly once the reveal was made, thanking Feige, Horowitz, and the fans in Hall H for finally making the long-rumored casting a reality. Director Shawn Levy, who will helm the new film, also joined the stage and revealed that he and Gosling had actually been discussing Ghost Rider privately while filming ‘Starfighter’ together, describing Gosling in glowing terms as someone he deeply respects as a collaborator.

With the film now set for a 2028 release and Jonathan Tropper attached to write the screenplay, Gosling’s years of coy podcast answers finally have a clear payoff. Looking back at those old interviews now, it is hard not to appreciate just how well he managed to keep a straight face while sitting on one of Marvel’s most anticipated casting announcements.
