‘X-Men ’97’ premiered last week with the two first episodes on Disney+ and the first reactions are amazing. The show premiered with 100 % on Rotten Tomatoes with the critics calling it “Best Marvel release in years’ Metacritic gave the show a high 82 score indicating that it earned “Universal acclaim” – a feat that is a rarity in the last few years when it comes to Marvel Studios projects.

The show in large part played on its greatest strength, the fact that it is a direct continuation of the ‘X-Men: The Animated Series’ as it tried to imitate both the characters and animation to a reasonable extent while keeping the plot more mature and “raw” than what we’re used to seeing.

Now we’ve known for quite some time that Marvel Studios will be shifting its focus somewhat from live-action projects to animated projects in the future, and there are already several animated shows in development, either confirmed or rumored. Not all of them will be part of the MCU, as some shows, like ‘X-Men ’97’ are part of the Marvel Animated Multiverse. Since ‘X-Men ’97’ proved to be a massive success, according to Alex Perez, the studio might be open to exploring the ’90s animated universe. Currently, this will be done through the X-Men show with the potential to revive some other projects, notably ‘Spider-Man: The Animated Series.’

There have been discussions about exploring a Marvel 90s animated universe, which would most likely be explored through X-Men ’97 at this time. There is potential for more projects to be developed within this universe, the most likely candidate being a sequel series to Spider-Man: The Animated Series, but this is still very early in development as an idea being tossed around.

Part of this aligns with something that Winderbaum stated recently, that they have shifted to a real studio in recent times, playing with more ideas than they will realistically develop, so it doesn’t seem like such a far-fetched idea to revive Spider-Man’s show, considering that ‘X-Men ’97’ already has orders for two additional seasons. Season 2, is currently in production, and Season 3, is currently in the early stages of development.
