One of the Best Movies of the Year Starring Zendaya Is Now Streaming on HBO Max — and You Shouldn’t Skip It

Zendaya’s summer has already been packed with headlines, between her record-setting return in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and her role in Christopher Nolan’s sprawling epic ‘The Odyssey.’

It would be easy for one of her other 2026 projects to get lost in that shuffle, but this particular film has been generating its own kind of conversation since it first hit theaters months ago.

That film, A24’s ‘The Drama,’ spent its theatrical run this spring becoming one of the studio’s more talked-about releases, thanks in large part to a marketing campaign that carefully guarded its central twist. Audiences walked in expecting a wedding comedy and walked out debating something considerably darker.

Now that conversation gets a second wind, with ‘The Drama’ officially arriving on HBO Max as of July 31, following its April theatrical release. The film will also make its linear HBO broadcast debut the following night, August 1, at 8 p.m. ET, giving it a full rollout across the platform.

Written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli, ‘The Drama’ follows Emma Harwood, a literary editor played by Zendaya, and Charlie Thompson, a British museum director played by Robert Pattinson, in the week leading up to their wedding. During a rehearsal dinner game where the couple’s friends must reveal the worst thing they’ve ever done, Emma’s confession exposes a long-buried secret that upends everything Charlie thought he knew about their relationship.

The film’s marketing became something of a case study in its own right, building anticipation through unconventional means like a save-the-date announcement in the Boston Globe four months ahead of release, a pop-up wedding chapel in Las Vegas, and posters that evolved to mirror the story’s shift in tone. Despite that buildup, many viewers still felt blindsided by just how far the film’s tonal pivot went once Emma’s secret came to light.

That divisiveness hasn’t hurt the film’s commercial standing. ‘The Drama’ pulled in more than $105 million worldwide against a modest $28 million production budget, crossing the $100 million mark in just 19 days and becoming one of A24’s biggest hits, while also earning a 76% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Much of that critical praise has centered on the central performances. Zendaya’s approach to Emma has drawn particular attention for refusing to paint the character as either fully monstrous or easily redeemable, instead settling into something closer to an uneasy coexistence with a version of herself she can’t fully explain.

The streaming arrival also marks the first of what will be a busy stretch of collaborations between Zendaya and Pattinson this year. The two are also both featured in ‘The Odyssey,’ and they’ll reunite again later this year alongside Timothée Chalamet in Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three,’ set for a December 18 release.

Rounding out the cast alongside Zendaya and Pattinson are Alana Haim as Emma’s closest friend Rachel, Mamoudou Athie, Hailey Gates, and several other supporting players who round out the wedding week ensemble. For anyone who sat out the theatrical debate back in April, ‘The Drama’ now offers a chance to see firsthand what all the discourse was actually about.
