Martin Short has spoken about the death of his daughter, Katherine Short, in a new interview. The comments were shared in a CBS Sunday Morning segment, which is the source of the information.

Katherine died in February at the age of 42. Short described the situation as deeply painful for his family. He said, “It’s been a nightmare for the family.”

He also talked about how serious mental health struggles affected her life over many years. He explained, “She fought for a long time with extreme mental health, borderline personality disorder, other things, and did the best she couldn’t until she couldn’t.”

Katherine was the oldest of three children adopted by Martin Short and his late wife, Nancy Dolman. According to reports shared in the same CBS interview, she had been dealing with long-term mental health challenges.

Katherine worked in the mental health field and focused on helping others. She was a licensed social worker in Los Angeles and had worked with organizations like Bring Change 2 Mind, which works to reduce stigma around mental illness. She studied psychology and gender and sexuality studies at NYU and later earned a master’s degree in social work from USC. She also worked at UCLA’s Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital before entering private practice.

Her mother, actress Nancy Dolman, passed away in 2010 after battling ovarian cancer. Short has spoken before about the impact of losing his wife and how it changed life for his family.
