Paul Wesley Says the Full Enterprise Crew Coming Together Felt ‘Truly Magical’ in ‘Strange New Worlds’’ Series Finale

Paul Wesley has spent several seasons carefully building his own take on one of science fiction’s most iconic characters, stepping into a role that William Shatner and Chris Pine both made legendary long before he ever set foot on the Enterprise. As ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ heads toward its ending, Wesley’s version of James T. Kirk is finally about to reach the moment fans have been waiting years to see.

That moment centers on Kirk’s promotion to Captain of the USS Enterprise, completing the handover from Anson Mount’s Christopher Pike and marking the true beginning of the character’s most famous chapter. Season 4 has spent its episodes building steadily toward that transition, with the show’s fifth and final season, which wrapped filming last December, set to deliver that pivotal shift once and for all.

Wesley opened up about what that journey has meant to him personally in a new exclusive interview with ScreenRant, revealing his favorite moment playing Kirk came from a scene he can’t fully discuss yet without spoiling the show’s ending. Asked about his favorite time playing the character so far, Wesley pointed specifically to the on-set experience of finally having Kirk’s full Enterprise crew assembled together on screen.

“There was something truly magical about having these characters on screen together,” Wesley said, referencing the recently confirmed additions of Thomas Jane as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy and Kai Murakami as Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu joining the cast for the finale. He described feeling the chemistry click into place while filming, saying there was clearly “something working” once the full ensemble came together on set.

That completed lineup brings together Kirk’s crew alongside Ethan Peck’s Spock, Celia Rose Gooding’s Uhura, Martin Quinn’s Scotty and Jess Bush’s Nurse Chapel, giving longtime fans their first proper glimpse of the classic Original Series roster fully assembled within the prequel timeline. Notably absent is Ensign Pavel Chekov, whose introduction doesn’t occur until later in Star Trek continuity, during the second season of the original series.

Wesley’s comments carry extra weight given how deliberately he’s approached honoring the character throughout his run on the show. He’s previously spoken about making a conscious decision not to imitate William Shatner’s original performance, choosing instead to develop his own distinct interpretation of a younger, still-developing Kirk. That approach earned him direct support from Shatner himself, with Wesley revealing the two had spoken multiple times and that Shatner had been consistently encouraging throughout his time playing the role.

With Season 4 continuing to build toward Kirk’s formal promotion and the series finale promising the full crew reunion Wesley described so fondly, ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ appears to be closing out its run by finally delivering the classic ensemble fans have anticipated since Wesley’s casting was first announced. Given how much care has gone into building that chemistry on set, expectations remain high for how the show ultimately bridges its prequel storyline into the era audiences already know so well.
