Peacemaker Season 2: James Gunn Provides Update on Release Window

James Gunn first joined DC when he directed The Suicide Squad, a reboot/sequel to David Ayer’s original Suicide Squad movie. Although the movie was a box office bomb due to the pandemic and the fact that it was released on HBOMax and in theaters on the same day, the majority of fans and reviewers agreed that Gunn’s R-rated flick was better than Ayer’s.

The Suicide Squad introduced John Cena as Peacemaker, and after finishing the movie, Gunn developed a spin-off series with Cena in the title role. The series premiered in January 2022 on HBOMax and received praise from fans. Although it wasn’t sure if it was going to be a mini-series or a series, Peacemaker was eventually renewed for the second season. Still, that season won’t arrive so soon, considering all the other work Gunn has at DC now.

Today, one of Gunn’s followers on Twitter asked the filmmaker if Peacemaker Season 2 is still happening, and Gunn replied that it is set to arrive after the release of Superman: Legacy. Superman: Legacy is set to be the first movie of the new DC cinematic universe, officially titled DCU. Gunn is set to write and direct that movie, and the release date is currently set on July 11, 2025. If Peacemaker Season 2 is indeed set to arrive after Superman: Legacy, then we are not expecting it before late 2025 or early 2026.

We suspect that Peacemaker Season 2 is currently being written alongside Superman: Legacy, for which Gunn said two months ago: “I’m currently writing it.” We presume that Peacemaker Season 2 will start filming after Superman: Legacy concludes production but before the movie releases in theaters.

James Gunn’s next and final Marvel movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, is set to be released on May 5, 2025. After that, Gunn will work solely at DC as the co-CEO of DC Studios, a company that will plan and organize the forthcoming DCU, which will kick off in 2025 with Superman: Legacy. Although Superman will be the first DCU movie, Gunn announced that an animated series Creature Commandos will air before Superman: Legacy.
