The horror genre has found new life on television in recent years, with classic franchises exploring longer stories beyond the movie theater. Now, one of the most unique cult horror series ever made could be the next property to make that jump.

According to an exclusive report from Dread Central, a television adaptation of ‘Phantasm’ is currently in development. Details about the project remain limited, but the potential series would bring back the strange world created by filmmaker Don Coscarelli and introduce the Tall Man’s terrifying mythology to a new audience.

The possible move comes as horror studios continue looking at television as a way to expand famous franchises. Series like ‘Crystal Lake’, which explores the world of ‘Friday the 13th’, and other upcoming horror projects show that streaming platforms are becoming a major place for stories that might have once only received theatrical releases.

Before this new television project, horror writer Nick Antosca was developing a new ‘Phantasm’ movie based on his own screenplay through his Eat the Cat production label. Dread Central reported that the project was said to be impressive, although it remains unclear whether Antosca is still connected to the television adaptation.

The original ‘Phantasm’ arrived in theaters in 1979 and introduced audiences to one of horror’s strangest villains, the Tall Man, played by Angus Scrimm. The film followed Mike Pearson, a teenager who discovers that something unnatural is happening at a local mortuary, leading him into a battle involving supernatural forces, mysterious silver spheres, and a terrifying figure who appears to control life and death.

Unlike many traditional horror movies, ‘Phantasm’ mixed science fiction, fantasy, and horror together. That unusual style helped the film develop a passionate fan base and turned the low-budget release into a long-running cult franchise.

The series continued with four more films, including ‘Phantasm II’, ‘Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead’, ‘Phantasm IV: Oblivion’, and ‘Phantasm: Ravager’. Across the movies, the story followed Mike and Reggie as they continued their fight against the Tall Man while slowly uncovering more about his mysterious origins.

This would not be the first attempt to bring ‘Phantasm’ back in a major way. Previous revival plans included a possible reboot from New Line Cinema in the 2000s, which was described as an ambitious attempt to expand the franchise. However, those plans eventually disappeared before production could begin.

The series later received renewed attention when filmmaker J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot company helped support a 4K restoration of the original film, allowing more viewers to experience Coscarelli’s creation in a new format.

A television adaptation could open several different doors for the franchise. The show could explore the history of the Tall Man, expand the strange worlds hinted at in the films, or tell a new story involving another generation facing the supernatural villain.

With horror icons continuing to find success on streaming platforms, the return of the Tall Man feels like a natural next step. Would you watch a ‘Phantasm’ TV series, or should the franchise stay on the big screen? Share your thoughts in the comments.
