The cliffhanger at the end of Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 1 will have to wait for answers. Sources tell Deadline that production on Season 2 of the Amazon Prime Video series has been delayed indefinitely due to issues with the cast.

Mark Eydelshteyn and Sophie Thatcher were set to play the new Mr. and Mrs. Smith for the second season, joining the show in December 2024 and February 2025, respectively.

Earlier this year, the series received a $22.4 million tax credit from the California Film Commission to move production from New York, where the first season was filmed, to Los Angeles.

Rumors circulated over the summer about potential guest stars, including Lily-Rose Depp, Francesca Scorsese, Levon Hawke, Wagner Moura, and Gael Garcia Bernal. Sources say none of these deals were finalized, and the planned fall start for production is now on hold.

New Regency, which co-produces the series with Amazon MGM Studios, hopes to begin pre-production at the end of the year for a 2026 shoot.

Meanwhile, showrunner Francesca Sloane, who created the series with Donald Glover, recently signed an overall deal with HBO and will be writing the first episode of Big Little Lies Season 3. It’s unclear whether Glover and co-star Erskine will return for Season 2.

The delay may affect the California tax incentive, as projects need to film within 18 months of receiving the credit, though there is still time to adjust. Amazon has declined to comment on the situation.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith was renewed for a second season on May 14, 2024. The first season was filmed in New York and Italy, and the second was set to move to Los Angeles. Production was officially reported to be postponed on September 11, 2025.

The delay is frustrating for fans, but it also highlights the challenges of coordinating big productions with multiple cast members. It will be interesting to see how the series moves forward and whether the new season can live up to the first. What do you think about this delay? Share your thoughts in the comments.
