‘Prison Break: Black Creek’ Teaser Confirms the Reboot Series Is in Production, and This Time No One’s Trying to Escape

‘Prison Break‘ spent years as one of Fox’s most binge-worthy dramas, built entirely around Michael Scofield’s elaborate quest to break his brother out of death row. That premise turned the show into a global phenomenon during its original run, and its legacy has only grown since, with the series reportedly ranking as the most-streamed show in the U.S. back in August 2024, years after it first went off the air.

That enduring popularity is clearly part of what’s driving Hulu’s decision to revisit the franchise, though this time the story is flipping the entire premise on its head. Rather than following someone trying to break out of prison, the new installment centers on someone choosing to walk in.

Titled ‘Prison Break: Black Creek,’ the series has now released its first teaser, confirming the project is officially in production and coming soon to Hulu. The show follows Cassidy Collins, a former soldier who takes a job as a corrections officer at one of the deadliest prisons in America, determined to prove just how far she’s willing to go for someone she loves.

Emily Browning stars as Cassidy, joined by Lukas Gage as Jackson, a well-off politician launching his first congressional campaign, and Drake Rodger as Tommy, an inmate who’s spent the last decade behind bars. Rounding out the ensemble are Clayton Cardenas as Ghost, a dangerous inmate; Myles Bullock as Darius “Red” Lewis, another prisoner navigating the facility’s brutal hierarchy; Georgie Flores as Andrea, a fellow cadet training alongside Cassidy; and JR Bourne as Junior, the mentally unstable lone survivor of a decades-old prison break that once devastated the surrounding town.

Behind the scenes, the series is written and executive produced by Elgin James, best known for co-creating ‘Mayans M.C.’ and ‘The Outlaws,’ operating through his Sierra Drive banner. The project first entered development back in November 2023, with a pilot officially ordered in December 2024 before its full ensemble was announced in March 2025.

Notably, this new chapter is set within the same fictional universe as the original 2005 series created by Paul Scheuring, but it isn’t expected to feature the franchise’s most iconic characters. Michael Scofield, played by Wentworth Miller, and Lincoln Burrows, played by Dominic Purcell, are not currently attached to appear in this new installment, signaling that ‘Black Creek’ is being built as its own standalone story rather than a direct continuation of the brothers’ saga.

That approach mirrors the strategy behind several other successful franchise expansions in recent years, leaning on a shared universe and established brand recognition while giving new characters room to carve out their own identity. Scheuring himself remains attached as an executive producer alongside Dawn Olmstead, Marty Adelstein, and Neal Moritz, giving the project a direct creative through-line back to the original series even without its central duo returning.

The original ‘Prison Break’ ran for five seasons on Fox, spawning a TV movie titled ‘The Final Break’ and a mobile-exclusive spinoff called ‘Prison Break: Proof of Innocence,’ along with a video game, webisodes, a magazine, and a novel, cementing its status as one of the more expansive franchises of its era. With ‘Black Creek’ now confirmed to be in active production, fans finally have concrete evidence that this next chapter is moving forward after years of on-and-off development.

No premiere date has been announced yet, but with production officially underway, Hulu appears to be gearing up for a fresh take on a franchise that’s clearly still resonating with audiences nearly two decades after it first debuted.
