Quentin Tarantino Slams Modern Hollywood as a ‘Flavorless Sausage Factory’
Quentin Tarantino believes many of today’s Hollywood movies are missing what once made cinema special. In a recent piece written for Sight & Sound magazine, the Oscar-winning filmmaker shared his frustration with the current state of the movie industry and explained why he often prefers reading books over watching new films.
According to Tarantino, it has become difficult for him to enjoy most new releases because he finds himself noticing too many problems. He feels that many modern movies suffer from weak storytelling, poor casting choices, and attempts to please audiences instead of focusing on making great films.
Writing for Sight & Sound, Tarantino said, “Flaws, implausibilities, audience pandering, miscast performers or just plain stupid sit usually torpedoes every new movie coming out of the flavorless sausage factory that used to call itself Hollywood.”*
The director went on to explain that movies no longer give him the same feeling they once did. He said the excitement and sense of wonder that made him fall in love with cinema have become increasingly rare.
“These days, the entire concept of what is a movie is more inclined to inspire contempt in me than generosity,” Tarantino wrote.
While he has enjoyed a few films in recent years, he said none of them fully captured his imagination. He mentioned Steven Spielberg’s 2021 version of West Side Story and Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga Chapters 1 and 2 as movies he liked. However, he said they still did not provide the kind of experience he used to regularly find in cinema.
“I’ve seen movies I liked since then – ‘West Side Story’ (2021); ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ Chapter 1 and 2 (both 2024), a few others, but nothing that really held me in its grip and swept me away to the magical land of enjoyment that I use to visit regularly and was the reason I loved movies above all other artforms. These days I’d rather read a book,” he wrote.
Despite his criticism of Hollywood, one recent film managed to impress him. Tarantino praised The Rip, a Netflix crime thriller directed by Joe Carnahan. The movie stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as law enforcement officers who uncover corruption connected to millions of dollars in cartel money inside the Miami-Dade Police Department.
The film also features Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, and Kyle Chandler. Tarantino had strong praise for the project and especially highlighted the screenplay.
“A suspenseful new movie has come out that did grab me and held me for its entire duration,” he wrote. “The film is an exciting cop thriller with a novel premise that manages to deliver the goods in really clever ways.”
He also praised Carnahan’s directing, the performances from the cast, the cinematography by Juan Miguel Azpiroz, and the screenplay written by Joe Carnahan and Michael McGrale.
Away from filmmaking, Tarantino is currently working on a stage production called The Popinjay Cavalier. According to information shared about the project, it is a swashbuckling comedy set in Europe during the 1930s and is scheduled to premiere in London’s West End in 2027.
As for his future in movies, Tarantino has still not revealed what will become his long-discussed tenth and final feature film. Fans continue to wait for details about the project that could mark the end of one of Hollywood’s most influential directing careers.
