Focus Features’ R-rated horror film “Obsession” has pulled off another major milestone, returning to the number one spot at the U.S. box office. The film, directed by YouTuber-turned-filmmaker Curry Barker, continues to outperform expectations even weeks after release.

The report states that “Obsession” earned around 4.3 million dollars on its fourth Monday in theaters in the U.S., marking what is described as one of the strongest fourth-Monday holds ever for a horror film. This comes despite only a modest expansion in theaters over the weekend and strong competition from other genre releases, including titles like “Backrooms” and “Scary Movie 6.”

The film’s drop from the previous Monday is reported at just 19 percent, which is unusually low for a movie at this stage of its theatrical run. By comparison, other major horror titles reportedly saw steeper declines in similar timeframes. The film is now playing in roughly 2,900 theaters across the country.

With this latest performance, “Obsession” has reached an estimated 156.2 million dollars in total domestic earnings. Industry observers quoted in the report suggest the film is now firmly on track to cross 200 million dollars in the U.S., with some projections pushing its final run into the 220 to 250 million dollar range.

The success is especially notable given the film’s budget and acquisition history. “Obsession” was produced for under 1 million dollars and later acquired by Focus Features for roughly 15 million dollars for global distribution rights, excluding a few territories. That deal is now widely seen as extremely profitable for the studio.

A source cited in the report noted that the original expectations for the film were much lower, but its continued box office strength has changed that outlook completely. The same reporting suggests that keeping the film in theaters longer, and delaying its release on digital platforms, could further increase its final total.

“Obsession” follows a young man named Bear, played by Michael Johnston, who discovers a supernatural object in a music store. The object grants his wish for his friend Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette, to fall in love with him. The story quickly turns dark as the wish leads to disturbing and violent consequences. The cast also includes Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter, with Curry Barker also contributing a voice role.

The film’s journey began with Barker’s earlier short horror work on YouTube, which caught the attention of producers and led to his transition into feature filmmaking. His first feature, “Milk & Serial,” helped build momentum, but “Obsession” became his breakout theatrical success.

Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, the movie’s strong reception led Focus Features to secure distribution rights at a record price for a genre film at the festival. The involvement of Blumhouse Productions and producer Jason Blum further boosted its profile.

Now, with strong word of mouth and sustained box office performance, “Obsession” is being viewed as one of the standout original horror success stories of the year.
