Rachel Zegler and Marisa Tomei’s First Look for ‘She Gets It From Me’ Just Dropped

Rachel Zegler has had quite a stretch since stepping away from Disney fairy tales, and her next project looks like a dramatic tonal shift in the best way. After the polarizing rollout of “Snow White” earlier this year, the actress is turning to a much more grounded, character-driven story for her next big-screen role.

That story is “She Gets It From Me,” a comedy drama that first landed on the industry radar back in April 2025, when Variety exclusively reported Zegler had signed on to star opposite Marisa Tomei. The project reunited two very different career paths, pairing Zegler’s rapid rise since “West Side Story” with Tomei’s decades of acclaimed work, including her Oscar-winning turn in “My Cousin Vinny” and her more recent run as Aunt May across three “Spider-Man” films.

Now fans are getting their first real glimpse of the film in action. A new first-look photo shows Zegler and Tomei together on screen, giving audiences an early sense of the dynamic between the two leads ahead of the film’s eventual release. Based on the official logline, the story follows a daughter and her birth mother reuniting after a lifetime apart, learning how to navigate being in each other’s lives after years of separation.

Zegler stars as Nicky, whose engagement celebration unexpectedly turns into a search for her estranged birth mother, Charlotte, played by Tomei, described in earlier reporting as a pill-popping, ex-punk rocker still processing the choice she made years earlier to give up her daughter. What begins as an impulsive decision spirals into a chaotic, emotionally charged journey as the two women attempt to build a relationship neither fully expected to need.

Julia von Heinz, known for “Treasure” and Germany’s 2021 Oscar submission “And Tomorrow the Entire World,” directs the film from a screenplay written by Jay Reiss, who also produces alongside Anna Werner, Susan Leber, and Jack Chinery. Embankment Films handled early sales on the project, first shopping it around the Cannes Film Festival market back in 2025 before production got underway.

The cast has expanded significantly since the project’s initial announcement. Ed Helms and Nat Wolff joined Zegler and Tomei ahead of filming, with principal photography beginning February 23 in New Jersey, with additional production also planned in Germany. That rounds out an ensemble built to support the central mother-daughter dynamic at the heart of the story.

For Zegler, the project marks her first film role since “Snow White,” a release that generated more headlines for its surrounding controversies than for the film itself, despite some critics singling out her performance as a highlight amid an otherwise mixed reception. “She Gets It From Me” gives her a chance to lead a much smaller, character-focused story rooted in real emotional stakes rather than blockbuster spectacle.

Tomei, meanwhile, continues a career defined by consistently strong supporting and lead work across genres, adding another complex, hard-living character to a résumé that already includes Oscar-nominated turns in “In the Bedroom” and “The Wrestler.” Pairing her with Zegler in a story built around reconciliation and identity gives both actresses plenty of room to dig into something more intimate than either has tackled recently.

With production now complete and a first-look image finally in circulation, “She Gets It From Me” appears to be moving steadily toward release, though an official date has yet to be announced.
