Josh Duhamel has spent months hearing his Netflix hit ‘Ransom Canyon‘ called a ‘Yellowstone‘ knockoff. Now he is walking straight into the Yellowstone universe himself, and the timing could not be juicier for fans of both franchises.

The actor is joining Paramount’s upcoming Western thriller ‘The Rescue,’ a modern day project that pulls stars from across Taylor Sheridan’s cowboy empire and drops them alongside the man who plays Staten Kirkland on Netflix’s own answer to Yellowstone. ‘The Rescue’ stars Brandon Sklenar, who played Spencer Dutton in ‘1923,’ alongside Hassie Harrison, known for her role as Laramie on ‘Yellowstone.’ Sklenar was one of the leads of the Yellowstone prequel series that also starred Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, playing Spencer Dutton. Harrison’s casting had already given the project serious Yellowstone pedigree before Duhamel ever entered the picture.

Josh Lucas, Nick Searcy, Lorelei Olivia Mote, Austin Amelio, Spencer Treat Clark, Tim Blake Nelson and Josh Duhamel have all joined the Paramount film starring Brandon Sklenar. Old Henry director Potsy Ponciroli is helming the film from a screenplay by John Fusco, with production underway and the film set to arrive on January 29, 2027. That release window puts it right in the thick of awards season chatter, which only raises the stakes for a cast this stacked.

Josh Lucas previously played a young John Dutton, the character made famous by Kevin Costner, in flashback sequences on Yellowstone. That detail alone turns ‘The Rescue’ into something closer to a genuine Dutton family reunion than a simple ensemble Western, even before factoring in Duhamel’s Ransom Canyon baggage.

Schumacher told ScreenRant that Ransom Canyon does not try to be Yellowstone or Virgin River, and that it exists in its own world even though it shares themes of love and the struggle against new ways of life encroaching on the American frontier. That defense has not stopped the comparisons from following the show into its second season and now into Duhamel’s next project.
