Every big action movie needs a few breakout faces, and ‘Street Fighter’ has built its campaign around a cast that includes real-life fighters. Among them, Rayna Vallandingham is one of the most intriguing, a martial arts champion turned actress who is now stepping into her first major blockbuster.

With the film opening in theaters October 16, her press photos have started to circulate widely, adding to a promotional run that has leaned heavily on arcade nostalgia. Paramount and Legendary have spent weeks rolling out trailers, cast appearances and photocalls.

On October 5, new studio portraits of Vallandingham for the film’s press push have been shared. In both images, she wears a slate-blue washed-leather top with strap cutouts, with her long dark hair in loose waves and a gold hoop earring catching the light. One shot has her facing the camera head-on, the other shows her glancing over her shoulder against a pale backdrop.

The look is glamorous, but Vallandingham’s background is anything but typical for a red carpet regular. Born January 18, 2003, in Encinitas, California, she started taekwondo at age 2 and has earned 13 American Taekwondo Association world titles, excelling in forms and weapons such as the bo staff and nunchaku.

She is also a fourth-degree black belt who set a record at age 9 by winning six world titles in a single year. As she told Vogue India, “I was a shy kid, so they put me into martial arts to help me break out of my shell.”

After winning the XMA Forms world championships, she moved to Los Angeles to start acting, appearing in the martial arts film ‘Underdog Kids.’ She has also appeared in music videos, including Shawn Mendes’ “Youth,” where she showed off her skills.

Her biggest on-screen role before this film came in the final season of ‘Cobra Kai,’ where she debuted in season 6, part 2, in 2024 as Zara Malik. Zara is a martial arts influencer and “Queen of Karate” who fights for the Hong Kong dojo known as the Iron Dragons.

‘Street Fighter’ was only the second role of her young acting career, and that she had more than 3.7 million Instagram followers at the time, where she regularly posts stunt videos with staffs and nunchucks. She was also a 2025 rookie for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit.

In ‘Street Fighter,’ Vallandingham plays Juli, who first appeared in ‘Street Fighter Alpha 3.’ The character is a German private security officer and assassin who works for the villainous M. Bison. Primetimer describes her as affiliated with M. Bison’s brainwashed Dolls.

The film is set in 1993, the year ‘Street Fighter II’ dominated arcades. It follows estranged fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo), who are recruited by Chun-Li (Callina Liang) for the next World Warrior Tournament.

Director Kitao Sakurai, known for ‘Bad Trip’ and ‘The Eric André Show,’ leads an ensemble that includes Jason Momoa as Blanka, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Roman Reigns as Akuma and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog. Mel Jarnson plays Cammy, and Eric André appears as Don Sauvage.

Vallandingham and Liang have also appeared together in press photos shared by Cinethology. The pairing underlines how much of the cast’s appeal rests on actors who can actually throw a kick.

Fan reaction to the casting overall has been described as mixed since the film was announced. Even so, the first trailer was largely praised for looking like the best kind of dumb fun, according to SlashFilm.

The movie is the first release under Legendary’s distribution deal with Paramount, which makes opening weekend an early test for that partnership. It also gives audiences a chance to decide whether this is the live-action adaptation the franchise has long been waiting for.

For Vallandingham, it is the kind of platform that could turn a rising social media and martial arts star into a full-fledged action lead. The photos are only a preview of what she can do on screen.
