‘Reacher’ Season 4, Episode 5 Recap & Ending Explained: The Hunt For a Killer Just Became a Manhunt For Reacher Himself

Jack Reacher has spent his career walking into other people’s messes and walking out clean, but ‘Reacher‘ Season 4 has been steadily chipping away at that reputation. What started as a chance encounter on a Philadelphia subway has spiraled into a conspiracy involving stolen government files, hired killers, and a congressman with secrets of his own.

Season 4 adapts Lee Child’s novel ‘Gone Tomorrow,’ and the show has used its first half to slowly connect Anna Merrick’s death to a missing flash drive that seemingly everyone wants their hands on. By the end of Episode 4, “Karambits and Pieces,” two of the season’s central figures, Lila Hoth and Amisha Hoth, had been revealed as far more dangerous than they first appeared, setting up a reckoning that finally arrives in Episode 5, “Bridge.”

That reckoning starts with answers about Anna herself. The episode reveals she was being blackmailed into handing over a stolen government file in exchange for the safe return of her kidnapped son, Ben, and that she died by suicide on the subway after learning Ben was already dead, and after realizing Reacher had unknowingly ruined her one shot at getting him back alive.

The bigger gut-punch comes right after. Ben’s body turns up murdered with the same distinctive karambit knife tied to Lila and Amisha, and when Reacher races to their hotel expecting to save them from a group of armed attackers, he instead finds the two women have already killed and mutilated the men themselves. It’s the clearest confirmation yet that Lila and Amisha aren’t victims caught in someone else’s conspiracy, they’re active, lethal players in it.

That bloody hotel scene becomes the direct cause of Reacher’s new problem. Police read the aftermath as a slaughter with Reacher standing at the center of it, and rather than being treated as a witness or an ally, he’s now labeled a suspect. That shift is what turns him into Philadelphia’s most wanted man for the rest of the episode, stripping away his ability to move freely and forcing him further underground.

With Reacher effectively cut off from operating in the open, the episode leans harder on his support system. Tamara Green, Jacob Merrick, and Russell Plum, previously treated as more of a secondary storyline, get pulled directly into the danger when they end up caught in a firefight of their own. For Jacob, a small-town cop with little experience beyond routine traffic stops, that confrontation finally gives him his first real shot at avenging his sister Anna’s death, a storyline that’s simmered since the season’s earliest episodes.

None of this resolves the biggest question still hanging over the season, which is exactly what’s stored on Anna’s flash drive and why so many competing factions are willing to kill for it. Rather than tying off loose threads, the ending of ‘Bridge’ actually widens the circle of people hunting Reacher, setting up the back half of the season to deal with both the political fallout tied to Congressman Sampson and the true, still-murky motives behind Lila and Amisha Hoth.

Jacob’s act of avenging his sister closes the episode on a note of personal reckoning rather than a clean resolution to the larger conspiracy, which tracks with how the season has handled its supporting cast all along, letting personal stakes and the broader mystery escalate together rather than resolving one before the other.

With three episodes left before the season finale, ‘Reacher’ has left itself plenty of room to answer what’s actually on that flash drive and how deep the Hoths’ involvement really runs. New episodes continue weekly on Prime Video through the September 16 finale.
