That next move is ‘Resident Evil,’ Cregger’s reinvention of the long-running Capcom video game franchise, which follows an ordinary medical courier named Bryan as he stumbles into a full-blown viral outbreak in Raccoon City. Rather than pulling from established heroes like Leon Kennedy or Claire Redfield, Cregger built the film around an entirely new character, keeping the movie’s connection to the games centered on tone and structure rather than familiar faces.

That original-story approach means one of the franchise’s most beloved villains, Lady Dimitrescu, doesn’t appear anywhere in Cregger’s film, and that absence is exactly what set up his latest viral moment. When asked who he’d cast if a live-action ‘Resident Evil Village’ adaptation ever got made, Cregger didn’t hesitate, naming ‘Mad Men’ star Christina Hendricks as his pick for the towering, aristocratic vampire.

Cregger’s answer draws a direct line to Hendricks’s Emmy-nominated performance as Joan Holloway on ‘Mad Men,’ a role that established her as an actress capable of commanding a scene with sheer presence alone. That same magnetic, theatrical intensity is exactly the quality Lady Dimitrescu needs, given the character’s larger-than-life aristocratic menace inside ‘Resident Evil Village.’

Lady Dimitrescu first debuted in the 2021 game ‘Resident Evil Village,’ quickly becoming one of the most talked-about video game characters in recent memory thanks to her towering height and Gothic, vampire-adjacent design. Capcom has said the character was inspired in part by Morticia Addams and other iconic wicked women, with developers specifically trying to avoid a straightforward Gothic vampire look.

It’s worth being clear about what this actually is: Cregger’s comment is hypothetical fan casting, not a casting announcement or a confirmed project. There is currently no greenlit film adaptation of ‘Resident Evil Village,’ and Hendricks has not been formally attached to any Lady Dimitrescu role in any medium.

Whether any future installment in the franchise eventually brings Lady Dimitrescu to the big screen remains entirely unknown.
