The Russo Brothers Reveal the Wild Way ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Will Actually Top ‘Endgame’
Marvel fans are counting down the months until Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters, and excitement around the next major Marvel Cinematic Universe event continues to grow. The film is still keeping many details hidden, but the return of major characters and the introduction of new threats have already made it one of the most talked-about upcoming movies.
While fans are waiting for more information and a possible first trailer, directors Joe and Anthony Russo are already teasing what audiences can expect. According to an interview with CBR, Joe Russo said the movie will not only feature huge action moments but will also focus heavily on the emotions of its characters.
Russo explained that the scale of Avengers: Doomsday has made it one of the most challenging projects the team has worked on. He said the movie needs more than just large battles and famous heroes to work.
“[Doomsday and Secret Wars have] obviously been harder than the other ones, for that reason. The stakes keep going up,” Russo told CBR. “But emotional complexity is always the answer. You bring emotional complexity to anything, and it enriches it. It makes it a fuller experience for the audiences. It surprises you.”
The director also teased that fans should expect plenty of unexpected moments when the movie arrives.
“There are a lot of surprises in this. And I think [Doomsday is] the most emotionally complex of all of them. And in a lot of ways, the most mature of all of them,” Russo added.
The comments have created more excitement, but they also highlight a major challenge for the upcoming film. Avengers: Doomsday will be compared to two of Marvel’s biggest releases, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which were both directed by the Russo brothers.
Those movies worked because they were built on years of storytelling. Fans had followed the heroes for many films, and the arrival of Thanos felt like the conclusion of a long journey. His character had been teased throughout the MCU before becoming the main threat, giving audiences a strong emotional connection to the conflict.
Doomsday faces a different situation. While Doctor Doom is expected to play a major role, Marvel has not spent the same amount of time building him as a villain. Fans have only received small pieces of information about the character, meaning the movie will have to quickly create a strong connection between audiences and its central threat.
The same challenge applies to the multiverse storyline. Marvel has explored different realities in recent projects, but some viewers feel the concept has not yet reached the emotional impact that earlier MCU stories achieved.
Because of that, simply making the movie bigger may not be enough. The film will need strong character moments, meaningful conflicts, and a story that makes fans care about what happens next.
Still, the Russo brothers have experience handling massive Marvel projects. Their work on Infinity War and Endgame became some of the most successful superhero films ever made, and many fans believe they have the ability to deliver another memorable chapter.
Avengers: Doomsday has plenty of expectations waiting for it, but the filmmakers appear focused on creating more than just a large-scale superhero battle. If the emotional side of the story connects with audiences, Marvel may once again deliver a movie event that fans remember for years.
