Few British entertainers have fallen as far, or as publicly, as Russell Brand. A former radio host and Hollywood comedy star who moved away from mainstream media and built a large online following with videos mixing wellness, conspiracy theories and religious devotion, he has spent nearly 3 years at the center of one of the most closely watched criminal cases in showbusiness. His police interviews were among the earliest chapters of that story.

Brand rose to prominence in the early 2000s, hosting television programs and his own BBC radio show. He went on to appear in Hollywood films including ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ and ‘Get Him to the Greek’, and he was briefly married to pop star Katy Perry. Everything changed in September 2023, when The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4’s ‘Dispatches’ published allegations against him, and he was dropped by his talent agent and publisher.

Now, the Metropolitan Police has released footage from those interviews, published on Thursday after his conviction. The clips are drawn from interviews conducted between November 2023 and July 2025, giving the public a first look at how Brand responded to detectives.

In the footage, Brand acknowledges a very promiscuous past while insisting he never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity. He also describes the 2023 documentary as defamatory and fictitious. That documentary is ‘Russell Brand: In Plain Sight’. In an earlier interview, he reads from a prepared statement acknowledging his previous sexual behavior while denying wrongdoing.

When detectives press him on specific accusations, the tone shifts. Brand largely stays quiet and repeatedly tells officers he has nothing further to add. Footage of a December 2023 interview shows him remaining largely silent as an investigator describes a woman’s claims, and he says his solicitors’ questions to police have largely gone unanswered.

Brand was first interviewed over 3 alleged offenses in November 2023, and questioned a second time on December 14 over 6 more non-recent allegations. London police charged him in April 2025, and 2 further counts were added that December. That brought the total to 7 charges involving 6 women.

The trial at London’s Southwark Crown Court lasted 3 weeks. Prosecutors portrayed Brand as a predator, while he told the jury that consent was always non-negotiable. He also acknowledged that he had been obsessed with sex as a younger man. The jury was also played the women’s police interviews.

His lawyer urged jurors to separate Brand’s treatment of women from the question of whether he committed crimes. The defense also stressed that the women only went to police years after the alleged incidents. Prosecutors noted that all 6 complainants came forward after the 2023 documentary aired.

After about 8 and a half hours of deliberation, a jury of 8 men and 4 women convicted Brand of 1 count of rape and 3 counts of sexual assault. He was found not guilty on 2 other counts of rape and 1 count of attempted indecent assault. CNN reported that the rape conviction related to a young fan. The 3 sexual assault convictions involved incidents dating from 2004 to 2009.

Judge Joel Bennathan revoked Brand’s bail, saying the rape verdict would inevitably mean a significant custodial sentence. Brand will be sentenced on Monday. He has maintained throughout that his past sexual encounters were consensual.

The Metropolitan Police called the verdict a testament to the courage, resilience and determination of the women who came forward. Police also said Brand used his influence, status and fame to prey on and exploit women. The release of the interview footage adds a fresh layer to a story that has dominated headlines since 2023.
