Few casting announcements in the MCU’s recent history have generated the kind of sustained, breathless speculation that followed Sadie Sink’s entry into ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. The ‘Stranger Things’ alumna was confirmed for the film in March 2025, and since that moment, the internet has barely paused to breathe. Now, with tickets officially on sale and the release just around the corner, Sink is finally speaking, though she is being extremely careful with what she lets slip.

Speaking to Fandango ahead of the film’s pre-sale launch, Sink reflected on what it means to be part of one of the biggest film franchises on the planet. “It was so exciting,” she said. “I grew up watching these movies, so to join it is very surreal. I really like the character, and that’s all I’ll say.”

That final clause is doing a lot of heavy lifting. In eight words, Sink managed to confirm that her character is someone she is genuinely enthusiastic about, while still leaving the door firmly shut on any actual details. For a franchise that has kept her role under tighter wraps than almost any other casting in recent memory, it is a perfectly calibrated tease.

Sink’s instinct for discretion is not new. In a previous interview, she revealed that keeping ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ secrets feels “even more secretive” than guarding ‘Stranger Things’ finale spoilers, noting, “That’s why I feel like keeping Stranger Things secrets are kind of easy because I have so many Spider-Man secrets I’m sitting on.” For context, the ending of ‘Stranger Things’ was one of the most protected finales in Netflix history, which makes that comparison genuinely striking.

Her path to joining the film was itself a remarkable story. Sink revealed that she actually encountered online fan theories predicting she would be in the new ‘Spider-Man’ film before she was ever approached about the role, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “I found out through online theories. Like, before I got cast in Spider-Man, there was speculation online that said, ‘Sadie Sink is going to be in the new Spider-Man.’ I was like, ‘Hmm? I am?’ And sure enough, two days later, they asked me to do it.”

Kevin Feige’s Cheeky Comment About Sadie Sink in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Says Everything Without Saying Anything

Despite every effort from Sony and Marvel to keep the mystery alive, the speculation around Sink’s character has coalesced around one name above all others. According to industry insider Jeff Sneider, Sink is indeed playing Jean Grey in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, a theory that has been further supported by alleged leaked footage, insider reports, and a near-constant stream of fan analysis.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige added his own layer of delicious ambiguity when speaking to Empire Magazine, responding to a question about whether audiences would recognize Sink in the film by saying, “If you’ve seen Stranger Things, you’ll definitely recognize her… I know what you meant,” before laughing off any further comment.

The intrigue deepens when you factor in the film’s wider narrative. Leaked plot details suggest that Sink’s character uses mind control abilities during a tank scene to manipulate other characters, which some fans have pointed to as behavior consistent with a powerful psychic mutant, while others note it seems out of step with how Jean Grey is traditionally portrayed. Whether that tension is the result of a deliberate character reinvention or points toward a different identity entirely remains one of the summer’s most tantalizing open questions.

What makes Sink’s arrival in this franchise feel genuinely exciting beyond the mystery is the trajectory it represents. She spent years as one of the standout performers in ‘Stranger Things’, building a reputation for emotional depth and screen presence that far outpaced the material she was given. Sink herself has called the role a “full-circle moment,” having been offered the part while still on set filming the final season of ‘Stranger Things’, and describing the chance to join Holland’s franchise as a lifelong dream come to life.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton has also proven himself a filmmaker who draws real performances out of his casts, and the combination of his sensibility with Sink’s talents is one of the more quietly exciting elements of ‘Brand New Day’ beyond the headline spectacle. Whatever she is keeping secret, she is clearly keeping it with pride.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ opens in theaters on July 31, and with pre-sales already live, the countdown is very much on.
