Scarlett Johansson’s ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Future Just Got a Major Update From the Writer
Jurassic World Rebirth may have brought dinosaurs back to the top of the box office, but the future of the franchise is still being figured out behind the scenes.
Following the huge success of the 2025 film, reports have suggested that Universal is exploring a sequel. While nothing has been officially announced yet, screenwriter David Koepp has now shared an update on where things currently stand.
According to comments he made during an interview with ScreenRant, the creative team is still in the early stages of discussing what comes next. Koepp, who wrote both the original Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park before returning for Jurassic World Rebirth, explained that the biggest challenge is finding a believable way to continue expanding the story.
Rather than thinking about multiple films at once, Koepp said the focus remains on creating a strong standalone movie first.
“You can’t say trilogy. You got to make one good movie. So now what about another good movie? How would we do that?” he said.
That mindset played a major role in shaping Jurassic World Rebirth. Koepp explained that the franchise had grown so large over the years that he wanted to make the dinosaurs feel special again. One way the film achieved that was by limiting where the creatures appeared and focusing much of the action in a more contained environment.
“The franchises have become very big, very spread out. Let’s make the dinosaurs special again by restricting them,” Koepp explained.
Now, if a sequel moves forward, the challenge will be doing the opposite without losing what made Rebirth work. Koepp admitted that nobody has yet found a solution that feels both logical and scientifically believable.
“Okay, now how do we logically and in a scientifically believable way expand? That would be the question. If somebody can answer that, I think you’ll have a next movie.”

The comments suggest that Universal is taking a careful approach with the franchise instead of rushing into another installment. While Jurassic World Rebirth earned mixed reviews from critics, audiences showed up in huge numbers. The film grossed $869 million worldwide and even received an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects.
The movie also marked a fresh start for the series. After the Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard trilogy concluded with Jurassic World Dominion in 2022, Rebirth introduced a new cast led by Scarlett Johansson. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the film became the seventh entry in the long-running franchise.
The Jurassic saga first began with Michael Crichton’s 1990 novel Jurassic Park. Steven Spielberg turned the book into one of the most influential blockbuster films ever made in 1993. The success of that movie launched multiple sequels and helped create one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises.
Even after more than three decades, the series continues to attract audiences around the world. However, Koepp’s latest comments make it clear that the next chapter is far from finalized.
For now, Universal has not officially greenlit a sequel to Jurassic World Rebirth. There is no confirmed title, release date, cast list, or production schedule. Still, with the previous film proving to be such a major box office success, it seems likely that the studio wants dinosaurs back on the big screen sooner rather than later.
Whether the team can solve the creative puzzle of expanding the world while keeping the story grounded remains the biggest question. Until then, Jurassic fans will have to wait and see where the franchise evolves next.
