‘Sea of Thieves’ Hands Players the Keys to the Seas in Massive Custom Seas Free Update Trailer
Sea of Thieves is getting a big new shift with its Season 20 update called Custom Seas.
Sea of Thieves has been running strong for eight years now. It has become one of the main multiplayer games on Xbox Game Pass. The developers at Rare have kept it alive with steady updates, new content, and fresh ways to play. Now they are going in a very different direction.
Season 20 arrives on June 18, and it is built around giving players more freedom than ever before. The idea behind it is simple. Players are now getting what the developers call the “keys to the seas.” This means you are no longer just playing in the world. You can now shape parts of it.
The biggest feature in Custom Seas is a level editor. This tool lets players build their own game modes inside Sea of Thieves. You can design competitive matches like sniper duels or chaotic naval battles, even ones using rowboats. It is not just about fighting either. You can also build cinematic-style scenes or create calm social spaces where you and your friends can hang out.
The system is designed to be flexible. You can make something serious and competitive or something completely silly. It depends on how you want to use it. The trailer shows that Rare is focusing heavily on player creativity this time, instead of only adding traditional missions or story content.
Not everyone in the community will be focused on building. Rare also expects a lot of user-made content to appear quickly once the update launches. That means even players who do not touch the editor will still get new experiences. There should be fresh modes, maps, and activities made by other players almost immediately after release.
The update will be available across Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation 5. That wide release means the community behind Custom Seas could grow very quickly, especially once players start sharing their creations.
Season 20 marks a clear change in direction for Sea of Thieves. Instead of only exploring content made by Rare, players will now help shape what the game becomes.
