The series, known in Japanese as 光が死んだ夏 (Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu), began as a manga written and illustrated by Mokumokuren.

It started serialization on Kadokawa Shoten’s Young Ace Up website in August 2021, and as of July, seven tankōbon volumes have been released. The story follows teenager Yoshiki Tsujinaka, who discovers that his friend Hikaru Indo has been possessed by a mysterious entity. Yoshiki must navigate the dangers and changes this brings to their friendship, all while facing supernatural threats.

Mokumokuren initially created the series while studying for exams and shared early drawings on Twitter.

The posts caught the attention of Young Ace Up editors, leading to the manga’s official serialization. The first anime adaptation, produced by CygamesPictures, aired from July to September.

Directed by Ryōhei Takeshita, who also handled series composition and character designs, the show’s chief animation direction was led by Yuichi Takahashi, with additional animation by Masanobu Hiraoka of Dorodoro.

The anime was met with strong praise from both fans and critics. The first volume of the manga sold 200,000 copies within three months, earning recognition for its storytelling, artwork, and character development. The show’s opening theme, “Saikai” (“Reunion”) by Vaundy, and ending theme, “Anata wa Kaibutsu” (“You Are My Monster”) by Tooboe, also received positive attention. Netflix is streaming the series worldwide, while Abema offers free streaming in Japan.

With the announcement of a second season, fans can look forward to more supernatural thrills and the continuation of Yoshiki and Hikaru’s story. The first season’s success sets high expectations for what’s next.
