Simu Liu Just Gave Fans a Reality Check on When They’ll Actually See ‘Shang-Chi 2’

Marvel sequels have a way of testing fan patience like few other franchises can, especially when a beloved standalone hit gets swallowed up by the studio’s larger, ever-shifting slate. Few characters illustrate that pattern better than one hero whose long-promised follow-up has been quietly pushed back for years now.

That character is Shang-Chi, and the actor behind him has spent much of the past few years fielding the same question over and over from fans hoping for updates. With the character now returning to the MCU after a lengthy absence, those questions have only gotten louder.

Simu Liu addressed the status of ‘Shang-Chi 2’ once again in a recent fan interaction shared by itzyreviews, and his answer made clear that even he doesn’t have a firm timeline yet. Rather than offering fans a release date, Liu indicated that the sequel is still stuck behind two massive upcoming Avengers films on Marvel’s release calendar, reiterating that ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’ will both arrive before ‘Shang-Chi 2’ gets its turn.

The wait for ‘Shang-Chi 2’ has been a long one by any measure. A follow-up to 2021’s ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ was first reported as being in development back in December of that same year, with original director Destin Daniel Cretton signed on to return for both writing and directing duties.

Since then, the project has been repeatedly delayed by shifts elsewhere in Marvel’s production pipeline. Cretton’s attention shifted away from the sequel when he took on directing duties for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which released in theaters this past July, pushing ‘Shang-Chi 2’ even further down the priority list despite Cretton confirming in a July interview with ScreenRant that the film remains in active development.

In the meantime, Liu has stayed busy elsewhere in the franchise. He’s set to return as Shang-Chi in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ later this year, sporting a completely new costume for the character, and has since confirmed he’ll appear again in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ the following year, extending his MCU commitments even further before any ‘Shang-Chi’ sequel can realistically move forward.

Even with the sequel still in limbo, Liu has continued expressing enthusiasm about returning to the wider Marvel universe. Describing his experience on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ in three words, Liu called the project “dream come true,” telling ScreenRant that working alongside so many actors he grew up watching felt like getting to stand among his peers for the first time.

He expanded on that sentiment further, describing the ensemble film as something close to a love letter to the entire superhero genre, one built for fans who grew up feeling like outsiders and found comfort in comic books. That enthusiasm has carried through his recent press appearances, even as questions about ‘Shang-Chi 2’ keep circling back to the same unresolved timeline.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set for release in December and ‘Secret Wars’ following roughly a year later, Liu’s latest comments suggest ‘Shang-Chi 2’ realistically won’t begin moving forward until sometime after 2027 at the earliest. For a character whose solo debut helped reshape what an MCU origin story could look like, that’s a long runway still left before fans get a proper sequel.
