‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Gets the IMAX Treatment as It Becomes the Biggest Domestic Opener Ever
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is getting even bigger after its record-breaking start, with Sony Pictures’ latest Marvel adventure officially expanding to IMAX theaters across North America.
IMAX Corporation announced that Tom Holland’s newest Spider-Man movie will begin playing across the IMAX network starting Thursday, August 6. The move comes after the film delivered a huge performance in international IMAX markets, especially in China, Japan, and South Korea.
According to IMAX, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ earned $23 million from IMAX screenings across those three countries during its opening period. The movie’s success in premium theaters helped prove that audiences were eager to experience Peter Parker’s latest adventure on the biggest screens possible.
China was the biggest contributor, with the film earning $19 million in IMAX alone. That performance marked the biggest IMAX opening weekend ever for a Spider-Man movie in the country. IMAX also reported that the format represented 16% of the film’s total opening weekend box office in China, making it a major part of the movie’s international success.
South Korea also delivered a record-breaking result for the superhero sequel. The film earned $2.4 million in IMAX during its opening weekend, setting a new record for the biggest IMAX opening weekend in the market. IMAX screenings accounted for 9% of the movie’s opening weekend earnings in the country.
In Japan, where the film shared the IMAX schedule with other major releases, ‘Brand New Day’ still managed to bring in $2.2 million from IMAX theaters. The premium format made up an impressive 18% of the movie’s opening weekend total there.
IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond praised the movie’s performance and said Spider-Man continues to be one of the strongest superhero brands at the global box office.
“Spider-Man has been among the most bankable superheroes at the global box office for over two decades — with the franchise delivering $365 million in IMAX receipts to date — and Brand New Day is taking that legacy to new heights with its record-breaking opening weekend,” Gelfond said.
He added that IMAX expects more fans to experience the film in theaters and believes the format will help drive repeat viewings.
The North American IMAX release will also come with an interesting scheduling situation. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ will share select digital IMAX locations with Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ while Nolan’s film will continue playing exclusively in all 41 IMAX 70mm film locations around the world.

‘The Odyssey’ has also been a major success for IMAX, earning more than $221 million globally through the format. The film will continue expanding into more international markets, including South Korea, China, and Japan in the coming weeks.
The IMAX announcement follows a massive opening weekend for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which reportedly became the biggest domestic opening weekend of all time after updated box office numbers pushed its total to $360 million.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker, alongside Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo. The story follows Peter as he continues fighting crime in a world where people no longer remember him, forcing him to deal with loneliness while facing a dangerous new threat.
With its record-breaking launch and upcoming IMAX expansion, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is continuing to prove that audiences are still ready to show up for major superhero events on the biggest screen possible.
