‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is Finally Swinging Into IMAX, and Here’s When

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has spent its opening days dominating headlines with a historic box office launch, but one format has conspicuously been missing from that celebration until now. Tom Holland’s return as Peter Parker arrived in theaters on July 31 without the massive IMAX rollout typically reserved for a Marvel tentpole of this size, a gap that stood out given the film’s otherwise record-breaking debut.

The reason behind that absence traced directly back to Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ which locked down an exclusive multi-week IMAX window beginning July 17. That exclusivity effectively boxed ‘Brand New Day’ out of the format entirely during its crucial opening frame, even as the Spider-Man sequel shattered records across nearly every other premium format available to it, including ScreenX, 4DX, and Dolby Cinema.

That’s set to change soon. Sony Pictures has announced that ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ will begin expanding into IMAX across North America starting August 6, according to the studio’s official announcement.

Under the new arrangement, ‘Brand New Day’ will share the IMAX global network with ‘The Odyssey’ across select digital IMAX locations in North America, while Nolan’s film continues holding onto all 41 of IMAX’s 70mm film locations exclusively.

That distinction matters for anyone hoping to catch either film in its most premium possible presentation. ‘The Odyssey’ was shot entirely on IMAX’s 70mm film cameras, making those specific film-based screens the true showcase venue for Nolan’s project, and the studio’s exclusivity there remains untouched by this new arrangement. ‘Brand New Day,’ meanwhile, gets access to the broader digital IMAX network instead, giving audiences in more markets a chance to see Spider-Man’s latest adventure on the giant screen for the first time.

Elsewhere in the world, ‘Brand New Day’ has already found real success in IMAX where it has been available. In China, the film posted a $19.2 million IMAX opening weekend, setting franchise-best records for Spider-Man in that market, with additional IMAX runs in Japan and South Korea contributing to a combined $23 million haul across those three territories during its debut frame. That performance came even as ‘The Odyssey’ remained absent from Chinese IMAX screens entirely, with its own IMAX debut there not scheduled until August 14.

The North American expansion arrives at a moment when ‘Brand New Day’ is already proving it doesn’t need IMAX to put up historic numbers. The film opened to an estimated $355 million domestically and $927 million worldwide, landing as the second-biggest global opening in box office history behind only ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Sony had also committed to a 60-day minimum theatrical exclusivity window for the film, according to earlier reporting, giving it a long runway to keep building on those numbers well into the fall.

For fans who have been waiting to catch Peter Parker’s latest fight against a shape-shifting new threat on the biggest screen possible, the August 6 expansion finally offers that option domestically. It also signals a notable shift in how competing blockbusters are learning to coexist within IMAX’s limited screen inventory, splitting access between digital and film-based venues rather than forcing one title to sit out the format entirely.

With both ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Brand New Day’ continuing to perform at historic levels, IMAX’s ability to accommodate two major hits simultaneously could end up shaping how future scheduling conflicts get resolved between competing studios. For now, moviegoers eager to see Spider-Man swing across an IMAX screen finally have a date to look forward to.
