‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is Already Breaking International Box Office Records Before It Even Opens
The summer box office has already delivered one genuine phenomenon in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ a three-hour Greek epic that turned into one of the year’s biggest theatrical events. Following an act like that would be a tall order for almost any film, let alone one opening without access to premium IMAX screens.
That is exactly the challenge facing ‘Spider-Man Brand New Day’ as it heads toward its July 31 release. Nolan’s film has locked up an exclusive IMAX window through mid-August, meaning Tom Holland’s return as Peter Parker has to make its case to audiences without the format advantage most blockbusters count on.
Judging by early ticket sales, that handicap has not slowed anything down. ‘Brand New Day’ is now posting the best pre-sales for any film this decade in both the United Kingdom and Australia, with the UK tracking toward a 35 million to 45 million dollar opening weekend and Australia projected to clear 20 million dollars, even with reports suggesting the Australian rollout could use more show times to keep pace with demand.
Those international numbers line up with what has been happening domestically for weeks now. The film already posted the best first day presales of any release in five years, a record last held by ‘Spider-Man No Way Home,’ with domestic advance sales crossing 40 million dollars well before opening weekend even arrived.
Fandango confirmed ‘Brand New Day’ became its single biggest first day preseller of the entire year, a notable distinction given that it means outperforming ‘The Odyssey’ itself, which had set its own tracking records only weeks earlier. That kind of momentum has pushed long-range domestic projections as high as 260 million to 300 million dollars for the opening weekend alone.
Global estimates have climbed just as fast. Some tracking now points to a worldwide opening weekend as large as 700 million dollars, a figure that would place Holland’s Spider Man among the biggest global debuts the superhero genre has ever produced.
What makes all of this especially notable is the format disadvantage the film is working around. Every major analyst tracking these numbers has pointed to the missing IMAX screens as the one thing working against ‘Brand New Day,’ since those auditoriums remain tied up with ‘The Odyssey’ through its exclusive booking window.
Clearing that hurdle while still posting record-breaking numbers across multiple territories says a lot about where audience appetite for Spider Man currently sits. After a rockier stretch for Marvel Studios overall, with underwhelming turnouts for projects like ‘Captain America Brave New World’ and ‘Thunderbolts,’ a launch like this would function as a clear signal that the superhero genre still has plenty of life left when the right character and story line up.
‘Brand New Day’ follows Peter Parker in a world that no longer remembers him, forcing him to fight for a life he can no longer fully reclaim, with Holland leading a cast that includes Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, and Jon Bernthal under director Destin Daniel Cretton.
Can Spider-Man: Brand New Day become the biggest movie of the summer?
With numbers like these rolling in from the UK and Australia well ahead of release, ‘Spider-Man Brand New Day’ looks increasingly likely to become one of the defining box office stories of the summer once it finally swings into theaters.
