‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Just Beat ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to a Record Nobody Thought Was Catchable

Box office milestones have been falling at a dizzying pace ever since Tom Holland’s latest outing as Peter Parker hit theaters, but this week’s record chase has felt different from the daily updates that preceded it. Rather than another single-day figure or opening weekend tally, this one targets a much longer stretch of sustained dominance.

That distinction matters because holding the top spot for one big weekend is one thing. Sustaining record-breaking numbers day after day, through a full Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday grind that typically sees ticket sales taper off sharply, is an entirely different challenge, and one that few films in history have managed to pull off.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has now cleared that bar decisively. According to Sony Pictures, the film has surpassed $500 million in North America in just seven days, officially becoming the fastest movie ever to reach that half-billion milestone and supplanting ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ which previously took eight days to hit the same mark back in April 2019.

The film’s cumulative domestic gross landed at an estimated $508.7 million by the end of its first full week, giving it the highest-grossing first week in domestic box office history. That places ‘Brand New Day’ among an extremely exclusive group, since only 23 films in history have ever crossed $500 million domestically, and just six of those belong to the MCU.

The daily numbers behind that milestone have been just as remarkable individually. ‘Brand New Day’ delivered the biggest Monday in box office history with $47 million, besting the previous record held by 2018’s ‘Black Panther’ at $40 million, followed by the biggest Tuesday ever with $42 million, and a Wednesday haul of $32.7 million that ranked as the second-best Wednesday of all time behind only ‘The Force Awakens’ during its 2015 Christmas break run.

That pace has also made ‘Brand New Day’ the fastest film ever to cross $400 million domestically, doing so in just four days, and the second-fastest movie in history to reach $1 billion globally, hitting that mark in six days behind only ‘Endgame’s’ five-day run. The film’s worldwide total now sits north of $1.155 billion, already surpassing ‘Toy Story 5’ to become the highest-grossing movie of the entire year.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige weighed in on the milestone directly, telling Variety, “I did not expect ‘Endgame’s’ [domestic] record to be beat, but I couldn’t be happier that it was beat this past weekend by our 38th MCU movie.” His comments echoed the broader sense of surprise circulating around the film’s performance, given how untouchable ‘Endgame’s’ records had seemed since 2019.

Looking ahead, current trajectory projections suggest ‘Brand New Day’ could eventually climb to a domestic total around $921.4 million, which would place it as the second-highest-grossing domestic release of all time behind only ‘The Force Awakens’ at $936.7 million. With no major new releases on the immediate horizon and IMAX screens only just opening up to the film this week, that ceiling could climb even higher before the film’s run finally slows down.

For a franchise now on its eleventh live-action installment, breaking a record many assumed was permanently out of reach marks one of the more remarkable box office achievements in recent memory. Whether ‘Brand New Day’ can eventually threaten ‘Endgame’s’ full global total remains the last major question left standing.
