‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Just Helped Push 2026 Box Office Numbers to a Milestone Year
Hollywood has needed a win for a while now, and this summer finally delivered one worth celebrating. Between record-breaking superhero returns and a string of surprisingly strong theatrical debuts, the domestic box office has quietly been having one of its best stretches in years.
Weekend after weekend, theaters have stayed busy, with one franchise in particular refusing to slow down even as new competition rolls into multiplexes. That momentum has been building toward numbers that industry analysts are now pointing to as proof of a genuine box office rebound.
The latest weekend results confirm it. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ powered to $70 million domestically over the weekend, remaining the No. 1 film in North America for a third consecutive frame, while newcomer ‘The End of Oak Street’ opened to $21 million.
Sony and Marvel’s superhero sequel, starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker, has now amassed $785.8 million domestically and crossed $2.02 billion globally, making it the highest-grossing release in Sony Pictures’ history. The film’s third-weekend haul marks the second-best third weekend of all time domestically, trailing only ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’
‘The End of Oak Street,’ Warner Bros.’ prehistoric sci-fi mystery starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, debuted just ahead of Paramount’s animated sequel ‘PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie,’ which opened close behind at $20.5 million. Despite a “B” CinemaScore and a strong 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, ‘Oak Street’ will need positive word-of-mouth to build any real staying power against Spider-Man’s continued dominance.

Beyond the weekend’s individual numbers, the bigger story is what all of this box office activity adds up to for the year as a whole. Domestic grosses from January 1 through August 16, 2026 have reached $6,865,342,584, compared to $5,750,445,334 during the same period in 2025, putting the industry up 19% year-over-year.
That kind of growth reflects more than just one blockbuster’s success. With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ still packing theaters alongside holdovers like Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ which added another $23.2 million to push its own total past $504 million, audiences have clearly been showing up in force throughout the year.
Not every new release has managed to capitalize on that enthusiasm, though. ‘The End of Oak Street’ now finds itself under pressure to rebound in the coming weeks, joining a run of underperforming tentpoles for Warner Bros. that has already included this year’s ‘Supergirl’ and ‘The Bride.’
Still, the overall trend line paints a healthier picture for the industry than the past several years have offered. With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ on pace to potentially challenge ‘The Force Awakens’ for the all-time domestic box office record, and year-to-date totals already running well ahead of last year’s pace, theater owners have plenty of reason for optimism heading into the fall movie season.
Whether that momentum can continue once Spider-Man’s historic run finally cools off remains the bigger question looming over the rest of 2026. For now, though, moviegoers seem more willing than ever to head back to theaters, and the numbers are backing that up in a big way.
