‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Just Set a Box Office Record No Superhero Movie Has Ever Touched
Box office milestones have come fast and furious throughout 2026, but even in a year full of blockbuster surprises, one film has managed to stand out from the pack. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ spent its opening weekend rewriting expectations, and the momentum hasn’t slowed down since.
Sony and Marvel’s latest web-slinging adventure launched with roughly $360 million domestically, narrowly surpassing ‘Avengers: Endgame’ for the largest North American opening weekend ever recorded. That kind of debut usually fades fast once the initial curiosity wears off, but ‘Brand New Day‘ has done the opposite, converting its massive opening into sustained, week-over-week staying power.
That endurance has now produced a genuinely historic milestone. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ crossed $900 million at the domestic box office on September 5, reaching the mark in just 36 days and becoming the fastest film in history to hit that threshold, according to Deadline.
Only one other movie has ever crossed $900 million domestically: Disney and Lucasfilm’s ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ which needed 50 days to get there back in 2015. That means ‘Brand New Day’ beat the previous record by two full weeks, a gap that speaks to just how unusual its box office trajectory has been.
The film’s weekly drop-off numbers help explain why. On its sixth Friday in theaters, ‘Brand New Day’ grossed $3.9 million, a decline of just around 30 percent from the previous Friday despite losing 158 theaters heading into the weekend. For comparison, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ saw a much steeper decline at a similar point in its run, while ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ dropped by a comparable but still larger margin.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton’s film, starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Sadie Sink, is now closing in on an even bigger prize. ‘The Force Awakens’ still holds the all-time domestic box office record at approximately $936.6 million, and with ‘Brand New Day’ sitting around $903.6 million as of early September, the gap between the two films has shrunk to roughly $33 million.

That kind of legs late into a theatrical run typically comes down to repeat viewership, families bringing new audiences back to theaters, and casual moviegoers continuing to show up weeks after the opening-night crowd already spoiled the plot online. Industry reporting has pointed to exactly that kind of sustained audience turnout as central to explaining the film’s unusual staying power.
The film’s international performance has been just as strong. ‘Brand New Day’ pulled in $932 million globally during its opening weekend alone and crossed $2 billion worldwide in just 17 days, putting it among a small handful of films in cinema history to reach that level that quickly. Its current worldwide total sits at roughly $2.332 billion, placing it fourth on the all-time global chart.
‘Brand New Day’ has now held the number-one domestic spot for six consecutive weekends, a streak that hasn’t been matched since ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ spent seven weekends atop the charts back in 2022. That run is expected to come to an end soon, with ‘Practical Magic 2’ projected to take over the top spot in the coming weeks.
Whether ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ ultimately overtakes ‘The Force Awakens’ for the all-time domestic crown remains to be seen, but the film has already rewritten the record books once. With momentum still on its side heading into its next few weekends, catching that final record no longer looks like a long shot.
Do you think Spider-Man: Brand New Day will beat The Force Awakens for the all-time domestic box office record?
