Tom Holland has opened up about his relationship with alcohol and why he decided to stop drinking in early 2022. He explained that he reached a point where alcohol was starting to affect both his personal life and his work. That realization pushed him to make a change.

Speaking on Amy Poehler’s podcast, he said that after quitting alcohol in January 2022, the first year of sobriety was the hardest period he had ever experienced. He described it as a major adjustment, especially in social situations where drinking is common.

He talked about how difficult it was at first to be around other people drinking while he was not. He explained that many social events felt unfamiliar without alcohol, and he had to adjust to being present in those moments in a different way. The experience made him notice how much drinking is often built into everyday social life.

Holland said that he started to see how limited the options were for people who do not drink in social settings. He described moments where others were drinking while he had something like a soft drink, and how that contrast made things feel isolating at times.

Over time, those experiences led him to think about creating something new. That idea eventually became Bero, a non-alcoholic beer brand that he helped launch. The brand was directly inspired by his own sobriety journey and his effort to find better options for people who choose not to drink alcohol.

He also shared that the brand even became part of social moments with people close to him, including actress Zendaya. He mentioned that they created a simple drink mix using Bero and lemonade so that everyone could take part in social drinking moments without alcohol.

In another interview with GQ, Holland reflected more on his life before quitting alcohol. He said that his drinking was not the typical “wild Hollywood” lifestyle that people often imagine. Instead, he described it as more private and sometimes lonely.

He said, “I had my times, but I wasn’t necessarily the nightclub-going person as much as I could sit at home in my hotel room and finish a minibar and go to work the next day.” He added, “So my version of wild was very, I guess, un-Hollywood.”

Holland also explained that he began drinking more heavily during his rise in Hollywood, especially while working on major films and the Spider-Man series. Even though he enjoyed his career success, he later realized that his habits were not healthy for him.

He said that taking a break from alcohol helped him reset his life and focus more on his well-being and career choices. He also mentioned that stepping away from drinking gave him space to think more clearly about what he wanted moving forward.

Now, after several years of sobriety, Holland has returned to major film projects while also building new personal ventures like his non-alcoholic drink brand. He described this stage of his life as a kind of reset that helped him grow both personally and professionally.
