The Bus Came Back, since Mr. Mxyzptlk finally returns roughly twenty episodes after his debut appearance back in Season 1. This installment also functions as an immediate sequel, picking up right where the previous episode left off with the main quartet falling into portals that turn out to have been summoned by Mxyzptlk all along. Gsptlsnz’s roster is made up of alternate universe versions of Lois, Kara and Jimmy, and since that reality’s Clark is dead, he’s replaced by an alternate Lex Luthor instead.

The stakes are made brutally clear early on, with Mxyzptlk baring his fangs and warning the heroes that losing means they will never see their precious universe again, essentially giving them no choice but to play along.

While the alternate Jimmy doesn’t come across as outright evil, the alternate versions of Lois and Kara prove to be far more ruthless than their main universe counterparts. One of the first challenges even has the teams crossing a stone bridge that feels ripped straight from an MTV style physical competition show.

The Twist Involving Kara and Powers

Mxyzptlk gets a rude awakening partway through, since he had no idea Clark had lost his alien abilities and was no longer functioning as Superman. To keep things fair, he strikes a deal with an unseen godlike judge so that Kara’s team, sometimes referred to as Scion Kara, is stripped of flight for the contest as well, which visibly frustrates Gsptlsnz. It’s a sly bit of loophole logic on Mxyzptlk’s part, evening the odds without technically breaking the tournament’s rules.

Interestingly, the situation raises its own logical wrinkle, since it’s never quite explained why Mxyzptlk doesn’t also strip away the energy blaster built into the alternate Jimmy’s flashy armor, a detail that leans into the show’s well documented love of anime style design. Fans picking apart the episode online have leaned into that inconsistency as part of the fun, treating it as one more example of the show not taking its own rules too seriously.

Clark Kent’s Powerless Struggle Takes Center Stage

Away from the games themselves, the episode leans hard into Clark’s personal unraveling, since nothing has been going right for him as Season 3 marches forward. He wants to marry Lois and build a future together, but she remains skeptical given her own neglected childhood under the command of General Sam Lane.
