‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 4 Episode 4 Release Date: When “A Case of Chiaroscuro” Beams In

Paramount+’s beloved prequel series has been running through genres at warp speed this season, hopping from dinosaurs to psychological horror without slowing down for breath. With the Enterprise crew barely catching their breath after a shore leave gone sideways, fans are already looking ahead to what the next chapter has in store.

Set decades before Captain Kirk takes command, the series follows Christopher Pike and his crew as they explore uncharted corners of the galaxy while gradually inching closer to the events of the original ‘Star Trek‘. Season 4 has embraced that mission statement more literally than ever, mixing dinosaur encounters, ghost-ship horror, and hallucinatory pleasure planets into its opening run of episodes.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 4 Episode 4, titled “A Case of Chiaroscuro,” premieres on Paramount+ on Thursday, August 13, 2026, continuing the show’s weekly Thursday rollout that began with the season premiere on July 23. New episodes typically become available at 12 a.m. Pacific Time, or 3 a.m. Eastern Time, a release pattern that has held steady throughout the season so far.

The episode finds Una mistaken for a resistance leader and drawn into a struggle against Klingon occupation, a premise that promises a much darker, more politically charged detour than the season’s earlier lighter installments. The title itself nods to chiaroscuro, an Italian term referring to the dramatic contrast between light and dark often associated with film noir cinematography, hinting at the visual and tonal direction the episode may take.

Episode 4 arrives on the heels of “Human Best Friend,” the season’s third installment, which sent the crew to a pleasure planet for some overdue shore leave that quickly turned dangerous once most of the crew woke up without memories of the previous night. That episode marked a deliberate tonal shift after the season’s darker opening chapters, following the primordial dinosaur-filled premiere “Valles Marineris” and the psychological horror of “The Griffin Incident,” which saw an entity aboard the U.S.S. Griffin dig into the minds of Kirk, Spock, and La’an.

That kind of genre-hopping has become the defining feature of this season, and “A Case of Chiaroscuro” looks poised to continue the trend by swapping out horror or comedy for something closer to a wartime thriller. With Rebecca Romijn’s Una at the center of a Klingon occupation storyline, the episode gives one of the show’s steadiest characters a chance to carry a mission-driven narrative largely on her own.

The season has already confirmed its full ten-episode lineup, with the remaining episodes rounding out through the finale. Following “A Case of Chiaroscuro,” viewers can expect Episode 5, “Level-Five Transporter Accident,” on August 20, Episode 6, “Off-Hour,” on August 27, and a run of episodes carrying the story through September before the season finale, “Tomorrow’s Enterprise,” closes things out on September 24.

‘Strange New Worlds’ has already been confirmed for a fifth and final season, which is expected to be shorter than previous years at six episodes and will bring Pike’s crew’s story to a close while fully transitioning the series into the framework of classic ‘Star Trek’. An exact premiere date for that final run has not yet been announced, with a 2027 release currently expected.

Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers continue as showrunners for the season, with the returning ensemble cast including Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, and Martin Quinn, alongside guest appearances from Carol Kane and Paul Wesley as a younger James T. Kirk.

With Una about to be thrust into occupied territory and the Klingon Empire entering the picture, “A Case of Chiaroscuro” looks like it could be one of the season’s more serious turns yet.
