One of the plot points that George Lucas added to Star Wars was the idea of the ‘Chosen One.’ This referred to Anakin Skywalker, who was destined to destroy the Sith and bring balance to the force. Anakin fulfilled his prophecy by destroying the Emperor at the end of ‘Return of the Jedi.’ This brought balance to the Force, and the Sith were no more until Palpatine returned in the sequel trilogy. Rey then destroyed him, leaving audiences wondering if she was indeed the Chosen One. That’s what we are to break down. Here’s whether or not Rey could be the Chosen One!

Even though Rey managed to destroy Palpatine, she is not the Chosen One, but that does not mean she is not part of the prophecy. We learn at the end of ‘Rise of Skywalker’ that Rey becomes all the Jedi, and through that power, she can destroy Palpatine, eradicating the Sith from the Galaxy. The Force selected Rey to continue the mission of the Chosen One, with the title still referring to Anakin Skywalker.

Now that we have briefly discussed whether or not Rey was the Chosen One let’s analyze it in more detail. If you are interested in what the Chosen One prophecy is, how Rey becomes all the Jedi, and how she carries the mission of the Chosen One, stay with us and keep reading!

What is the prophecy of the Chosen One?

In ‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace’, we learn that Anakin Skywalker is the Chosen One. The Chosen One is born of the Force and destined to bring balance and destroy the Sith. We know that even though Anakin becomes Vader, he does fulfill his destiny.

At the end of ‘Return of the Jedi,’ through his son, Darth Vader returns to the light and destroys Emperor Palpatine, bringing balance back to the Force. However, it is never said that he destroys the Sith for good, and it makes sense for people to want to continue the Sith, which brings us to the sequels.

In ‘Rise of Skywalker,’ we learn that Palpatine returned and was behind Snoke and Ben Solo becoming Kylo Ren. This brings us to Rey, who is set to continue the mission of the Chosen One and destroy Palpatine once and for all. It makes you think, if Rey killed Palpatine, does that not make her the Chosen One?

Rey is continuing the legacy of The Chosen One

As stated before, Rey is not the Chosen One, but the Force selected her to continue the mission of the Chosen One.  When Rey hears the voices of all the Jedi, Anakin says, ‘Bring back the balance, Rey, as I did.’ This confirms that Anakin was the true Chosen One and has selected Rey to restore it. After Rey is gone, there will be many more people to continue the mission that was started by Anakin Skywalker without him even realizing that he did it.

The prophecy isn’t as simple as it seems. When the Jedi took in Anakin, they most likely thought that he would bring back balance during his time as a Jedi, causing Obi-Wan and Yoda to be shocked at his turn. To bring balance back to the Force, Anakin used both the light and the dark, which was why he turned into Darth Vader and now represents the balance of the Force in his death. Only his son was able to bring him back, which led to him killing the Emperor and, in doing so, himself.

How is Rey “all the Jedi”?

I am all the Jedi

By saying Rey is all the Jedi, it doesn’t mean that Jedi have possessed her and taken control; it simply means that the souls of past Jedi help her in her quest to destroy Palpatine. Through the Force, they pass their power into Rey, which she then channels to use against Palpatine.

This is not something that they can do all the time. As we see, it does weaken and kill her. Ben Solo brings Rey back to life as her power was too much for her. After Rey is gone, she will become one with the Force, and the next generation will be the ones to continue the mission of the Chosen One. This cycle will be ongoing and will likely be explored more in future projects.

Will we see more of Rey?

Luke and Leia force ghosts

This idea of Rey continuing the Chosen One’s mission will likely be explored further in her upcoming solo film, which was confirmed recently. The film is set to focus on Rey as she trains the next generation of Jedi who will continue her mission. It would be no surprise if the Force Ghosts on Anakin and Luke appeared to help her in her quest, as Anakin was the one who originally brought balance.
