Strong Pre-Sales for ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ Prove the Star Wars Brand Is Still Dominating Moviegoers
Big franchise films often rely on strong early audience interest to predict how well they might perform at the box office. Before release, tracking reports, pre-sales data, and marketing pushes can all give a rough idea of how many people plan to show up on opening weekend.
For major studio releases, especially those tied to long-running universes, these early signals are closely watched by the industry.
According to early box office tracking reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming film The Mandalorian & Grogu is showing strong pre-sale performance ahead of its release. The report suggests the film is currently tracking toward an opening weekend between $80 million and $100 million in the United States.
The movie is part of the wider Star Wars universe and continues the story from the streaming series The Mandalorian. It is directed by Jon Favreau, who also co-wrote the script alongside Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor. The film is being produced by Lucasfilm and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
The story follows Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, and his companion Grogu as they take on a new mission after the fall of the Galactic Empire. They are recruited by the New Republic and sent on a mission involving Rotta the Hutt, the son of Jabba the Hutt. The mission is tied to larger political tensions in the galaxy as remnants of the Empire continue to create instability.
The cast also includes Sigourney Weaver as a New Republic leader and Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt. The film brings together characters from different parts of the Star Wars universe, including returning figures from earlier shows and films.
Production on the film began after plans for a fourth season of The Mandalorian were changed. Instead of continuing the series in its original format, Lucasfilm shifted focus toward developing a full theatrical movie. Filming took place in California and wrapped in late 2024, with additional casting announcements made during and after production.
Early reports also suggest that the marketing push is expected to increase closer to Star Wars Day, a key moment for franchise promotions. This timing is often used by Disney to boost interest across its Star Wars lineup.
The film is currently scheduled for theatrical release on May 22. With strong early tracking numbers and continued fan interest in the franchise, industry analysts are watching closely to see how it performs once it reaches cinemas.
