‘Sugar’ Season 2 Premieres on Apple TV+ as EP Teases Big Expansion of Alien Lore
Sugar season 2 has just started streaming on Apple TV+, and new comments from the show’s team are already pointing toward what could come next. The information comes from an interview with ScreenRant during the L.A. premiere coverage of the new season.
Kinberg spoke about the future of the series and how the alien side of the story will not stay limited to what viewers have already seen. He said, “We have a lot stored away for the future, in terms of what we’d want to explore with the alien part of Sugar’s life.” This suggests that season 3, or later episodes, could go much deeper into the science fiction elements of the show.
Even though the alien twist was revealed in season 1, Kinberg explained that season 2 actually focuses more on human emotions and personal struggles. He described the story as being grounded in human experiences, even while the main character comes from a non-human background. He said Sugar moves through Los Angeles feeling like he is in an unfamiliar world, especially in the darker parts of the city where he works.
Colin Farrell, who plays John Sugar, also talked about how his character changes in season 2. He explained that Sugar is dealing with loneliness and isolation at the start of the season. He added, “Loneliness is something that he’s really contending seriously with at the start of the [season], and so he goes out to try and get some work on another case, just because he’s out of his mind. He is the only one of his kind, as far as he’s concerned, who’s left behind.”
Farrell also described Sugar as someone who strongly believes in the goodness of people, even when reality makes that belief difficult to hold onto. He said the character experiences many emotional situations in season 2 that he did not fully face in season 1. According to Farrell, Sugar is strong and capable, but also very empathetic, which shapes how he reacts to the world around him.
He said, “There’s a bunch of what we call human experiences and emotions that catch up with him this season; ones that he didn’t really have to contend with in the first season.” He also added that the idea of a private investigator who is actually an alien makes the story interesting because it shows how someone from another world deals with very human problems.
The cast of season 2 includes Farrell along with returning actors Kirby and Jason Butler Harner. New additions include Jin Ha, Tony Dalton, Raymond Lee, Sasha Calle, Laura Donnelly, and Shea Whigham. The shift in cast also reflects the change in direction for the show as it moves forward after its first season.

Season 2 has started strongly with positive feedback from critics. The first season was also well received, helping build interest in where the story could go next.
Sugar season 2 continues to stream weekly on Apple TV+. While season 2 is still ongoing, the creative team is already hinting that the alien mythology behind John Sugar’s character will become a much bigger focus in future seasons, expanding the sci-fi side of the series even further.
