Supergirl Is Reportedly Heading to Digital Soon – Here’s When

Warner Bros. has always followed a fairly predictable playbook for moving its biggest releases from theaters to home viewing, but the speed of that transition often reveals just as much as the box office numbers themselves. This year’s DC Universe entry centered on Kara Zor-El has become the latest test case for that pattern, and the timeline emerging around its digital debut is turning heads.

Supergirl,’ starring Milly Alcock as the title hero, opened in theaters on June 26 as the second installment in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe, following her brief cameo appearance in last year’s ‘Superman.’ The film also features David Corenswet reprising his role as Superman in a smaller supporting capacity, alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa, rounding out the cast.

That theatrical run has now led to confirmation of exactly when audiences can expect to watch the film at home. ‘Supergirl’ is reportedly targeting a July 28 digital release, arriving just over 30 days after its theatrical debut, a turnaround that lines up closely with Warner Bros.’s recent standard practice for films that fall short of blockbuster expectations.

That standard practice has become something of a pattern for the studio in 2026. Recent Warner Bros. releases, including “They Will Kill You,” Lee Cronin’s “The Mummy,” and “Mortal Kombat II” all made their way to digital platforms within 31 to 32 days of their theatrical debuts, and ‘Supergirl’ appears to be following that exact same timeline rather than receiving any kind of extended theatrical exclusivity window.

The speed of this rollout stands in noticeable contrast to how Warner Bros. handled last year’s ‘Superman,’ which, despite performing strongly at the box office with a 125 million dollar opening weekend, still made it to digital platforms in 35 days, a similarly tight window for a film considered one of the studio’s bigger success stories. That comparison matters because ‘Supergirl’ has not replicated that same box office momentum.

‘Supergirl’ opened with an estimated 38 million dollars domestically, a noticeably softer result than the 47 to 50 million dollar range analysts had projected just days before release, and well below even the more conservative early tracking estimates. The film has also received more mixed reviews compared to its predecessor, a combination of factors that typically pushes studios toward faster digital availability rather than extending a theatrical exclusivity window that is not generating strong returns.

Once available, ‘Supergirl’ is expected to be offered across major digital platforms, including Apple TV, Prime Video, VUDU, and Google Play, following the typical pricing structure Warner Bros. uses for its premium video on demand releases. Fans hoping to catch the film on HBO Max specifically will still need to wait considerably longer, with streaming debut estimates pointing toward early to mid September based on the studio’s recent release patterns.

For a franchise still working to establish its footing after the character’s introduction in ‘The Flash’ back in 2023 and subsequent recasting under Gunn and Safran’s new DC Universe banner, this quick digital turnaround suggests Warner Bros. is treating ‘Supergirl’ as a film better suited to reaching audiences at home rather than continuing to chase theatrical momentum. Whether that strategy helps the film find a second life through rentals and purchases remains to be seen.
