‘Superman & Lois’ was always among the best CW superhero shows. It decided to distance itself from the Arrowverse and focus on its own thing. Despite having consistently solid viewership and solid ratings overall, the show was in danger of being canceled before season 3 concluded in the first place.
‘Superman & Lois’ is expensive, even though it mostly focuses on characters and Superman’s family life. As the show was running its course, fewer and fewer scenes featured Superman in a suit fighting bad guys.
After Nexstar acquired CW and the network was bound to be restructured, ‘Superman & Lois’ survived the onslaught during which many shows were canceled. A few days before the finale of season 3 was supposed to air, the news came that the show would continue under the new leadership, but some budget cuts will be made.
First, the show’s fourth season will be significantly shorter than usual, with only ten episodes. A few days ago, it was announced that the show will also continue with fewer writers and a supporting cast. Only four of the 12 Season 3 series regulars, Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth Tulloch, Michael Bishop, and Alex Garfin, are coming back, and the team of writers was slashed from eight to five, which is a drastic change.
Now it seems that the solid viewership is not worth it for the new CW after all, as season 4 will be the show’s last, as Variety reports.
“We are grateful for the years of hard work and graceful storytelling from the show’s writers, producers, actors and crew, as well as our terrific partners at Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions. As Superman embarks on his final flight, the team is leaving us with an absolutely epic 10-episode must-watch-every-minute farewell to one of the most legendary CW families ever.”Brad Schwartz, president of entertainment at the CW Network
The show has only recently introduced Lex Luthor, or at least its own take on him, and was setting him up to be the big bad guy of season 4. The finale episode of season 3 also featured a magnificent fight against Doomsday, partially adapting the famous “The Death of Superman.” Storyline.
The show is not coming back for season 5, but we’re still excited to see where the rest of the ride takes us. ‘Superman & Lois’ Season 4 is expected to start airing sometime in 2024.
