David Corenswet will reprise his role sooner than we expected. James Gunn has announced that a sequel to this summer’s Superman movie is officially in the works. The film now has a title and a release date. “Superman: Man of Tomorrow” will arrive in theaters on July 9, 2027.

Gunn, who directed the first film and also serves as co-head of DC Studios, revealed the news on social media. Along with the announcement, he shared a comic book image showing Superman standing next to Lex Luthor in his famous Warsuit.

Fans of the comics know that the suit was created by Luthor to give him powers similar to Superman. This seems to suggest that the villain will play a major role in the sequel, using the armored suit to face the Man of Steel directly.

The first Superman film from Gunn was a big win for Warner Bros. Discovery. It was released in the summer and went on to make more than $611 million worldwide, which made it the highest-earning superhero movie of the year. Because of that success, CEO David Zaslav confirmed in August that Gunn would return to write and direct the follow-up.

This sequel will not be the only DC project to reach theaters in the coming years. Before Man of Tomorrow arrives, audiences will see two other titles in 2026.

The first is Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock. The second is Clayface, a darker film with body horror elements, directed by James Watkins and starring Tom Rhys Harries and Naomi Ackie.

On Threads a few weeks ago, Gunn shared that he is already deep into writing the script. He also hinted that this movie will feel more like a team-up than a simple continuation of the first film.

That detail fits with comments made by Zaslav, who said Superman and the upcoming titles are all part of what he called the “Super-Family.”

For now, fans can only guess what Man of Tomorrow will bring, but the teaser image with Luthor’s Warsuit points to a major showdown between Superman and his greatest rival.

It’s exciting to see Superman return to the big screen with so much momentum behind him. Gunn seems eager to push the story forward while connecting it to a larger universe of characters.
