Suzy Bemba Rumored for Storm in Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ Reboot, and Fans Are Torn

Marvel’s next mutant ensemble has been slowly taking shape for months now, with director Jake Schreier quietly assembling a cast that already includes some recognizable names. Sadie Sink stepped into the MCU as Jean Grey through ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ while Samara Weaving and Kit Connor have both been linked to Emma Frost and Cyclops as the studio builds toward its long-awaited ‘X-Men’ reboot.

One role that has remained a mystery through all of it is Storm, the weather-controlling Kenyan mutant who has been a cornerstone of the X-Men roster since the comics’ earliest days. With casting still coming together ahead of a rumored 2028 release, fans have spent months speculating about who might take on the character, and this week brought a fresh name into that conversation.

Industry insider Jeff Sneider shared on the August 13 episode of his podcast ‘The Hot Mic’ that 26-year-old French actress Suzy Bemba is now in talks for the role. Sneider said the tip came from a source who previously identified Kit Connor’s involvement in the project before that news became public, giving the rumor more weight than a typical social media whisper.

Bemba isn’t a completely unknown name to film audiences. She earned wider recognition for her role in ‘Poor Things’ alongside Emma Stone, got her start in the horror film ‘Kandisha,’ and has a supporting part in the upcoming thriller ‘Cliffhanger’ opposite Lily James. She was also selected for the European Shooting Stars program at the Berlin International Film Festival and founded a professional support association for French actors.

The rumor didn’t take long to divide X-Men fans online. A significant portion of the fanbase had rallied around Jayme Lawson as their preferred pick for Storm, and Bemba’s name entering the conversation set off a wave of pushback from those still hoping to see Lawson land the role.

Others pointed out that Bemba’s darker complexion lines up more closely with the character’s comic-accurate look, while her relative youth compared to some rumored names could give Marvel flexibility to eventually pair her with a new T’Challa in future ‘Black Panther’ installments. That possibility has fueled speculation that Ryan Coogler, who has been tied to the broader search for Storm, may have influenced this direction even though Schreier remains the film’s director.

Responding directly on X to fans criticizing the report, Sneider defended both his source and Bemba herself, writing that “you Jayme Lawson fans are delusional” for assuming the internet gets to cast every superhero movie. He added that the pick, if true, “feels like the work of Ryan Coogler, the guy who discovered Miles Caton,” pointing to the director’s track record of finding new talent.

Sneider was also careful to note his own uncertainty about the scoop, describing it as coming from a single well-established source rather than something he considers fully locked in. Still, given his track record with past X-Men casting reports, the rumor has been enough to keep fans buzzing just as D23 gets underway this weekend, an event Sneider predicted could bring additional cast reveals of its own.

Nothing about Storm’s casting has been confirmed by Marvel Studios, and with the film still early in development, plenty could change before an official announcement arrives. For now, Bemba’s name joins a growing list of talent connected to one of the MCU’s most anticipated ensembles.
