‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4: Brendan Hunt Reveals Why the Cast Was “Giddy” to Welcome Tracey Ullman as Zelda Southport

‘Ted Lasso’ has always had a knack for introducing new characters who complicate Richmond’s world just as things start feeling stable. Season 4 has leaned hard into that formula as Ted’s new women’s team, the Lady Greyhounds, slowly finds its footing on the pitch.

That stability gets tested off the field, too, especially for Rebecca Welton and Keeley Jones, who are used to fighting for respect in a sport that hasn’t always taken women’s football seriously. So when a flashy new investor shows up promising exactly the kind of support the club desperately needs, it’s bound to raise questions.

That investor is Zelda Southport, introduced in Episode 4 and played by comedy legend Tracey Ullman. Zelda is the managing partner of a firm that invests exclusively in global women’s sport, and she makes her entrance as the keynote speaker at the Women’s Football Business Summit, using her spotlight to call out the male executives in the room for treating women’s football as an optics play rather than a genuine investment.

Keeley is immediately drawn to what Zelda’s connections could mean for Richmond, while Rebecca is far more guarded about letting a stranger that influential into the club’s orbit. That tension only deepens by the end of the episode, when Rebecca learns Zelda was previously arrested for threatening a club owner and also once changed her name, details that don’t prove any ill intent but certainly don’t inspire trust either.

Behind the scenes, landing Ullman for the role was apparently a bit of a dream outcome for the show’s creative team. Co-creator Brendan Hunt told AOL that once they’d settled on Zelda being an older mentor figure for Keeley and Rebecca, Ullman was the first and only name that came to mind, and the team never had to consider anyone else.

Hunt didn’t hide how thrilled the cast and crew were once she signed on, admitting they were, in his words, giddy that Tracey Ullman herself had agreed to join. He also praised how naturally she fit in on set, joking that she could have brought any number of eccentric quirks to Zelda and the writers would have simply built the character around whatever she wanted to do.

In her debut appearance, Zelda wastes no time establishing just how larger-than-life she is, revealing herself as the self-proclaimed inventor of the banana clip, among other unexpected claims. It’s the kind of introduction that fits Ullman’s decades-long reputation for scene-stealing comedic energy, dating back to her Emmy-winning sketch work.

For Rebecca in particular, Zelda represents a familiar kind of dilemma. She’s dealt with powerful people who use football clubs to serve their own agendas before, so she wants to understand exactly what Zelda expects in return before letting her get too close to Richmond’s future.

Keeley, on the other hand, seems ready to see Zelda as a genuine ally, someone who could finally give the women’s team the resources and visibility it’s been fighting for all season. That split reaction between the two friends sets up what could become one of Season 4’s more compelling ongoing conflicts.

Whether Zelda Southport turns out to be exactly what Richmond needs or a bigger problem in disguise remains to be seen as the season continues to unfold. Either way, Ullman’s arrival has already given ‘Ted Lasso’ one of its most intriguing new dynamics in years.
